Where is rap going. :-( 2015-06-20 15:02:52

Ever since people like Rae Sremmurd, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Fetti Wap started making new songs, I feel rap is coming to a slow and painful death. When I listen to 90's rap; the songs had a story to them. 2008-2010 were good years, but now it's just,
"THROW IT THROW IT THROW IT MAKE IT CLAP I FUCKED YOUR BITCH SMOKE WEED BRUH SWAG BRUH I'M GANGSTER BRUH IM CHILLIN WITH MY BAE BRUH."
What went wrong?

There's a LOT of trash from the 90s too. Call me crazy but I'm not interested in 2pac or Biggie at all, despite them being considered revolutionary for the movement. If I want commentary I'll listen to Public Enemy. If I want flow I'll listen to Del the Funky Homosapien.

Also, like all genres it's about knowing where to look.

Music is like candy, you throw away all the rappers because they're trash.

Ecchi first, ask questions never.

If that's how you feel about rap music, then maybe you should Turn off the Radio like Ice Cube said and find some more appealing artist. A new rapper emerges everyday, just a lot of them gets no radio play

MGK and Stitches are the future of Hip Hop

I disagree. I think there was a lot of good rap music back in the 90s compared to the stuff they try to pass off as "rap" nowadays.

At 6/20/15 03:08 PM, Avery wrote: 80's was terrible.

Also disagree. I can name plenty of rap songs from the 80s that I thought were actually quite good. In fact, I recently posted a list of several of them in the 80s music thread.

I don't think "Boyz in the Hood" was ever in GTA, unless you're talking about GTA V. I haven't played that one yet so I wouldn't know...

Del's a pretty dope rapper. I grew up in the Bay Area so I knew about him and Hiero ever since I was in elementary school. I still like 2pac though. 2pac is another Bay Area legend.

Honestly, I'm of the opinion that the stuff being branded as "rap" music today is not actually rap at all, and is actually just pop music. I could never call any of the stuff that kids listen to nowadays "rap." I'm sure many people might disagree with me on this, but that's just how I feel.

I was born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s and experienced what I consider to be the "golden age" of rap music. I think the so-called "rap" the kids listen to nowadays is absolute garbage. That being said, however, I still think that there is still good rap music out there, it's just so underground that hardly anyone knows about it. If you want to hear some dope shit check out K-Rino. He's like the antithesis to everything that is considered "rap" today.

Are you excited for the New Wayne album? What do you think about Birdman not releasing it?

Rap has always had the same premise since going mainstream. It's just gotten more obvious.

Idk if I'm just getting old or what.... but most new rap really sucks imho.

Rap and R&B were great in the 90's and early 2000's

i'm a huge wayne fan, obviously, but his quality has seriously been declining

Eh, even his worse stuff is still better lyrically than the average rap album to me

birdman, although he sometimes may seem like a yes man, is very serious about quality control and the break in their relationship occurred because wayne's product was likely sloppy and destined to fail

I thought he was just holding back the album as a marketing ploy to make more money? When did he ever care about quality control, he raps on albums and isn't very good

It's not evolving as a art form in my opinion, that's why it's dying.

It's going back to reality
Oh there goes gravity
Oh, there goes Rabbit, he choked
He's so mad, but he won't give up that
Easy, no
He won't have it, he knows his whole back's to these ropes
It don't matter, he's dope
He knows that but he's broke
He's so stagnant, he knows
When he goes back to his mobile home, that's when it's
Back to the lab again, yo
This whole rhapsody
He better go capture this moment and hope it don't pass him

It's a truth:
EVERY music genre has these people. These people who take away the soul out of the genre and go on a sell out spree by making music production blatant and massive, limiting its potential to the aesthetic satisfaction like catchy tunes and phrases and repeatedly re-used music. And all this is driven by a huge system of promoting and different-shaming with the goal of milking out money of course.
And by the way, for those arguing over 80s , 90s etc, just a reminder that many artists from these decades used to be a part of this system, but now are just considered "legends" or classics". The point is not idealizing the past and everything in it or even categorizing quality according to decades. Just search for the "right" artist, music, song and don't try to force it as the god tier music on others.
If you do love music generally and your music precisely, you have to question it again and again. There is no such thing as perfect art. You will know something is worth listening when you learn eventually to love it no matter what you don't like about it, but at least don't do that because the guy next to you likes it because the guy next to him likes it because the guy... Do it responsibly, consciously and...with your heart.

What were we talking about again? remind me please

Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Aesop Roc, real hip hop is out there, it just lurks under the thin veil of the mainstream. Where it belongs.
Really we should CELEBRATE the growing ignorance, foolishness and naivety of mainstream hip hop artists.
Although yeah, they're frusterating, they only serve to magnify the message of the underground.
The dumber the fool, the wiser the observer.
