Audio player improvements 2015-06-18 23:35:13

Tonight we rolled out another new player build with some additional improvements. The main improvement is that now the player will no longer skip / stutter while playing a regular submission. Loops may still stutter, but now in the options menu there is a "Smart Loop" option. This is enabled on loops by default, and is the old behavior. If you disable this option, loops will still repeat but the gaps between repeats will not be removed.

If you don't see this option, you may need to refresh your browser cache. Let us know if you guys see any issues.

Wow, this stuttering has been here ever since the redesign. It's great to see it fixed.

Thanks!

Yeah it was a completely unexpected thing to have gotten fixed this week along with removing the "Download as WAV" option. Plus it'll be easier for us to make additional changes to the players in the future.

BEAUTIFUL! That makes it a much more viable player! Anyone planning to allow for the creation of playlists? Or is that already a feature I'm too dumb to have figured out by myself?

That's already a feature! There's a button at the top of the audio player to add a submission to a playlist.

Just one thing sir. The context menu is still available in the mini-embed version. I recognized that when I was making a news post with it.

Nice catch. I will look into it.

OK that should be fixed.

I've noticed that while all the new improvements are in place, another bug has arisen.

Playing certain audio files makes the audio player go increasingly faster as time progresses (like, unnaturally, when the piece is not meant to have accelerando at all).

Do you have an example?

It's happened to me when I've listened to this particular song....

The bug did not happen earlier this morning, but it seems to be going faster now with each passing second.

Could you try different browsers on the same computer, and if you have access to another computer, could you try it there too? I can't replicate it myself.

Also: could you click on the player, which opens the option box, and disable Smart Loop? See if it happens then...

BTW - that is a loop so if this is indeed happening, then it would have happened with the old player too. The major changes would mainly affect non-loop playback.

I've got IE11(?), it's not giving me that problem, but Smart Loop isn't quite fully functional (the audio did stop and start). Turning off Smart Loop on IE11 didn't give me the problem either.

On Chrome, the same speed-up bug is happening to me, but when I turn off Smart Loop, it doesn't happen anymore. A different problem happens instead: the audio cuts halfway, and then starts from the beginning without playing the remaining half.

I've got a tablet upstairs; I might try it out with that.

I can't replicate this. Can you please right click on the player and tell me what version of Flash you have installed?

Not sure that will work. Flash isn't supported on many tablets so it'll use the built in player.

Hrm yeah I'm not sure what's going on. Are you having problems with other submissions? How old is your computer?

No other problems, not as far as I'm aware. My computer is 10 months old.

While overhauling the player itself has been a great thing, it seems to have broken on Chrome, for at least my version at home and at work.

In both cases, I only see the background behind the player, although I can hear and control the player just fine. I've cleared my caches at least five-six times for each, through multiple computers, but I simply haven't been able to see anything pop up.

I'm running on the most up-to-date version on all of these computers, just so you know which, last time I checked was Version 43.0.2357.130 m. All were tested on Windows 7, both x86 and x64.

That's bizarre. Does it work in any other browser??

Sorry, yes, it has been confirmed to work on IE11, although I haven't tried on any build of Firefox. A bit hard to troubleshoot, I know...

So you can control the player, just not see it? Can you right click where the player is supposed to be and take a screenshot?
