Why is the internet so..negative? 2015-04-27 15:46:46

At the risk of sounding ironic, why is it people are more inclined to bitch on the internet about any and everything than they are anywhere else? I understand it gives people a place to vent openly, but I rarely see as many people talking about things they like than I do people bitching about things they hate.

Maybe because in real life people pretend to like certain things.

The biggest negativity you see is against each other.

I try not to do that, it's lame to throw insults over a keyboard. I deal with enough bullshit from the stupid people at work. Except they're not insulting me. Just one woman in particular likes to cause drama and snoop into my personal life.

Trust me, I know. God forbid you mention a political opinion anywhere. Especially on Facebook. People just take that as an invitation to go on there and harass you.

That wasn't science. That was a guess. A very self righteous guess at that.

I'm not even talking stuff like that. She's a 12 year old girl in a grown-ass woman's body.

The Internet was designed to be a place where people could talk about things that they hate.

Then Eternal September happened and hundreds of Internet newbies got the mistaken impression that they could talk about things that they like. The created fan sites, forums, and hundreds of other websites and were shocked to find that everyone who visited only wanted to talk about things that they don't like about whatever the topic is.

I have used dozens of Interweb forums, and all of them are the same. It's all hate.

If you go on a Lord of the Rings Usenet group and start talking about how you think Frodo is the best character, somebody will instantly show up to shit on you and your pitiful opinion and tell you how Sam is actually the hero of the story.

If you go to a Star Wars forum and make a thread about how much you like Boba Fett, some guy who weighs twice as much as you do will show up and tell you how the extended universe makes his character essentially irrelevant.

If you find yourself on a videogame forum and talk about any game that isn't Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, your ass won't last more than 10 minutes before someone reminds you that the game you love is just a Doom/Civ/Rogue/Tetris clone that makes them want to jab out their eyes.

And it's time that you thing-likers admitted that the Internet is not for liking things. It's for hating them.

If you like anything or anyone on the Internet then you're using it incorrectly.

It's called "beating off" because you're openly showing your hatred for your penis by trying to strangle it.

At which point, pornography just becomes a tool - a weapon of sorts.

Watch him ... twice, again and again when needed, and hear exactly on every words what is there will spoken !

You can't request bans, doofus.

This isn't a democracy.

Don't make me ban you. I'm an undercover mod, and I've been the one who hasn't been signing those bans.

I'm also a strong black woman, too, and will use my pride and masculinity against you in your downfall.

Without reading through this thread (so it's possible others already gave similar responses), I'd say two main factors really.

1) It really depends what site you're on. Many sites are as you described, but not all. Some are friendlier than others. Some are harsher. Some are so extremely cliquish that if you're not a long-time established member they're just never going to accept you, and yet wonder why their "site is dying" -- and wait .. before anyone thinks this sounds like Newgrounds, keep in mind Newgrounds isn't this bad even if it may exhibit slight tendencies of noob-hate and "site is dying", but it's a lot more prevalent and worse elsewhere.

2) With anonymity or perceived anonymity or even some slight barrier (well I don't actually have to interact with them in person) ... comes a douchier behavior out of some people. It's weird because you almost have to know someone online and offline to know them -- I've had friends whose online behavior is absolutely atrocious and who are the most vile, vulgar online people, but offline they seem to behave different from that.

Yeah, I didn't read every response, either. I don't have time. Don't feel bad.

It isn't just that, but you do bring up a very good point. I was also thinking about things like, you know, if you like something and you say it you're bound to get a ton of people jumping on your dick and trying to attack you in packs. I've cracked jokes on Facebook on Facebook pages and gave positive opinions towards things I like only to be greeted with a ton of rabid internet users jumping on me. I'm not alone. I see that kind of crap all that time.

It isn't just Facebook, either. I see it here on Newgrounds and YouTube and elsewhere. I remember a thread about the Wii U (I think best games on it, or something) and I remember one guy coming in talking down on the Wii U and Wii U owners and was all, "PC games are the best!" Shit like that.

2) With anonymity or perceived anonymity or even some slight barrier (well I don't actually have to interact with them in person) ... comes a douchier behavior out of some people. I agree with you anonymity is why people think they can get away with it. I still don't know why being anonymous actually drives people to behave that way, you know? I know there's an actual name for it, but I can't think of it.

Back me up, @FunkBRS.

It works like this, okay?

Let's say you love a woman. 9 billion people in the world 4.5 billion of them women. By definition, then what you're REALLY saying is like like 4.5 billion other women less than the woman you love. Hell, you don't even talk to them, and if you did, you'd probably, well, HATE them.

If you give food to one starving child, that means all the other starving children don't get shit from you. And you don't feel guilty because you did your part. THEY STARVE AND YOU FEEL SMUG ABOUT IT.

Every second of your life you are bored, you are bored because everything you can think of you can do, you wouldn't like to to do ANY of it. And when you're bored, you get on the internet, which if full of websites you frankly won't be going to because they suck. The fact that you're on the internet at all is probably because your life sucks shit and there is nothing you can actually do about it.

If we were all living happy fulfilling lives, we wouldn't need a fucking internet now, would we?

If you look at the world through eyes of love, it's a confusing and scary place that doesn't seem to make much sense. If you look at the world through the eyes of hate, you wake up each day amazed things are holding together as well as they are.
