I have a humidor full of cigars, and like most things, what's best is subjective. Personally I prefer a Monte Cristo, however they are about $40 a cigar and if you live in the USA you're shit out of luck unless you go to Canada or settle for a Monte Cristo made in the Dominican Republic, which I do not recommend.
Your best bet is to go to a Cigar shop, or go online and read some reviews.
I personally buy my cigars from Cuban Crafters in Florida. Good product, great prices, and I thus far I've been able to not pay duty, so it works out to like $5 a cigar, compared to paying at least $20 for a decent cigar.
Some 7 minute cigars or cigarillos are not bad.
Al capones come to mind for 7 minute cigars. Black & milds are cheap cigarillos too but i prefer al capones.
swisher sweets are not great imo.
If you just want a cheapo not horrible cigar, a dutch masters is $1 and its not awful.
I have never really smoked an expensive cigar but i was given one by this hungarian guy i know, its from the dominican republic, not ordered online somebody bought them while they were there. some people go "OH ITS NOT CUBAN ITS NOT GOOD" but those people are sort of well... fanboys.

Bullseye grape flavored cigarillos are pretty good. If you're interested in the big cigars Century Sams are pretty cheap and they have a decent taste. I don't smoke cigars often, usually only when I'm drinking, so I don't know too much about them but those are the kinds I've tried and liked most.

99% of people assume tobacco is cheap shitty cigarettes and chew. A nice aromatic pipe tobacco is one if the most relaxing experiences I've had. I get complimented all the time about how good it smells, and unlike commercial cigarette tobacco, cigar and pipe tobacco isn't generally chalked full of cancer causing chemicals.
I'd compare it to drinking hard liquor. Good in small amounts, but too much of anything has risks.

Don't do it to be cool. Only do it if it's something you want to do. (Like if you're going to do it anyway and don't give a shit what other people have to say about it kind of thing -- in that case do it). If you just want to do it for the look, and not for personal reasons, then it'll probably have the opposite effect of what you're hoping, due to rampant intolerance of smokers these days, unless you go somewhere known as a smoker's hangout.
Also I like how people feel the need to butt in and say obvious shit like "smoking is bad for you" even though duh and also you even mentioned as much.
It could become a very expensive habit though depending what you do, how often, and what you buy. It's usually something people might have on a special occasion and not on the regular. If money isn't an issue then have fun I guess.

I'm not saying not to do it. I'm just saying don't do it to be cool. (You can do it for any other reason though). Unlike some others I'm actually not against smokers and I think most people who are against them are just assholes, even though I'm not a smoker myself.
The main things to keep in mind though would be price and setting. If there's a place smokers hang out in your area, that'd be a good setting. But typically what you'd do with cigars is get a bunch of bros together and pass out cigars, which could get expensive if you did that often, so save it for special occasions. It's a very bro thing.
