NG Stargazing Meet(s) Idea 2015-03-27 19:20:28

I have an idea for an NG Stargazing Meet, so hear me out.

I know that a lot of users live in other countries, so to make sure that this meet isn't isolated to one country, they can use skype or send live pictures/video of the stars at the stargazing meet location(s) to those who aren't able to go to the location(s).

I know that stargazing might not appeal to everyone, but for those who are interested in attending such a meet, all you have to do is find a group of NG users who live in your local area, and locate the nearest place where light pollution is practically zero and is in a wide open space without any obstructing views of the night sky. We can point out the various constellations and nebula and tell the stories of how the constellations and stars got their names, as well as the myths and legends behind them.

If you have a telescope, be sure to bring it. As for meeting times, I haven't really decided yet, but maybe during a meteor shower or similarly important celestial event that we can view.

So, if you're interested, what do you think of my idea and do you want to participate?

Nope. Just portable video games to pass the time on the ride there. Also, I'll bring a cooler full of various soda.

I don't think I can make it to Hawaii......too expensive of a trip for me....(I live in Michigan)

Haha that's pretty fucking gay bro

Pretend not to care about anything, but be bothered by everything.

You may be fast on the roads but it's no use on the track.

According to this, the next meteor shower is the Lyrids, which are on April 21/22.

Who's up for that?

2017 is quite a bit of time to save.

I'll still be paying for college by then, so I won't have enough money to go to hawaii even if I did start saving money.

To recap: This is just like a camping trip, only better. So I suggest bring some supplies for s'mores on the way to a place where there's a wide open space with no obstructions of the surrounding sky (except that of the Earth itself).

For the record, I do indeed own a telescope and I will bring it with me.

I would only go if there were copious amounts of drugs and alcohol, since I personally don't think stargazing would be very interesting after five minutes without some sort of depressant in my system

What kind specifically? Hopefully not a cheap walmart variety.

Nope, it's one of those "cost -about-a-hundred-dollars" type of telescopes. It should be somewhere in my basement somewhere, and it's still in mint condition since I haven't opened the box yet from when I got it on my birthday.

Also, if any of you meet up with Amaranthus, smash his face and balls in for me. Thank you in advance.

Is it a refractor or reflector, what's the magnification on it, what are its dimensions, etc

It's been awhile since I last seen my telescope, so I don't remember. I have to dig it out of my basement to find out.

Alaska is also an equally good place for stargazing, for not only does the vast majority of the state have zero to next-to-nothing light pollution, but we can also get a good view of the aurora borealis. We can even learn some of the local culture while we're there, such as the Inuits.

If you're serious about an Alaska meet I'm down for that

I am serious about an Alaska meet, for that is just one of the various places in the world that's perfect for a stargazing meet. We don't have to travel in one massive group to a single location, but we can split up into smaller groups to various other good locations for convenience purposes in case one location is too far away for some of us.

That would be pretty cool. I can't travel anywhere, but I can take pictures.

I myself may be unable to attend due to college finals that will occur around the same time period, but luckily there are other meteor showers this year that I can go to.

In that case, we should just organize a particular event to observe and report our observations in a single thread

Those of us with good equipment can take detailed photos and precise measurements

I'm not sure whether to keep using this thread for that, start a new thread just for making those meetings, or create a Stargazing Club in the Club & Crews forums (Depending on how old any pre-existing club is since its last post, if such a club already exists)

I never said that the earliest meet would be in 2017. The 2017 Hawaii Meet will merely be one of the later ones.

...I just searched "Astronomy" and "Stargazing" into the search bar, and the only club that came up was this:

http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1339943

So should I make a new club or not? For I want a thread that has a bit more traffic than the clubs and crew forum.
