This is truly is a great art piece to study, so good pick, but I think that you have missed an important point of the original picture, which is the masterful use of negative space (the sky). In your rendition the top of the wave nearly touches the edge of the canvas dividing the sky into to shapes rather than a unified whole - unlike the sea, which now plays a much more dominant role.
(Lets ignore the fact that you have chosen the place the fuji mountain close to the center - this is a rule of 3rds kind of thing and somewhat a different subject).
Try to notice what that does the general feel of the composition.
Can you see how the relationship between the two shapes (ocean vs. sky) have changed?
(And not only that, but also the meaning of the picture - since the two shapes form a jing and jang symbol in the original, but that is function, not form).
Whenever you are working with a visual medium, the space around whatever you are choosing to portray is, aesthetically, of equal importance to the object in focus.
