He is wondering what kind of good games only hipsters play. Nothing mainstream or constantly talked about. List out games that you think hipsters would play. And yes I have a friend who is a hipster who loves to make it obvious that he is a hipster.

Eventually.
A truly prophetic sig...
Gone Home. I've never played it, but it seems like the kind of game hipsters would be into.
But really though, tell him to play 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors. It had a loyal following, but it's still fairly small, so it's worth checking out.
3DS friend code NG member list. / I talk about game design using cartoons on youtube. / My Wii U username is Bobbybroccoli.

Tell him that Gaming is too mainstream, and he should find a new hobby.
If he doesn't go for that, tell him to play something like CoD ironically.

I would never tell anybody to play CoD. Not even joke about it.
Just send him to the 'Indie' section on Steam. Let his hipsterness flow

Tell him to go on steam and check out the 'early access' games, some of them are pretty neat and unknown. If he thinks they're too popular for him, tell him to go fuck himself and search for his games by himself.
Your friend is not a hipster. Your friend is a poser. He wants to "be" a hipster for some unknown reason(s), so he seeks to surround himself with things he thinks hipsters do. He probably intentionally dresses like whatever stereotypical "hipster" image he found off google images or something.
It seems just about all subcultures have posers.

I don't think so but it isn't as mainstream as most games.
Hipsters only emulate games from their childhood with their iPod.

Is this true? lol

Sometimes you'll get that one guy who plays indie games on Steam, but that's just because they remind him of his childhood games.

Lol Yeah my friend always preferred 2D side scrolling indies or old games and refer them as "retro" or "meta" games. Saying how they are the last remaining games that are artsy and original in this gaming generation. Games like Fez or even Super Meat Boy. Personally never liked Fez.

"Meta" games is just some term he pulled out of his ass. This should be your first clue he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Retro games are great and there's absolutely nothing wrong with liking them. However, if he considers Fez or Super Meat Boy to be retro games, then he has absolutely no idea what retro even means and again, no idea what he's talking about.
It sounds like he may like platformers (although with only those two examples of games he likes it's impossible to tell), but then he should just call them platformers. Those two particular games are definitely not retro.
It just honestly sounds like he's trying too hard to "fit in" to some perceived hipster culture, not that the term really has any meaning anymore. And that's the thing with being a poser is it's never going to work.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying retro games, but liking them does not you special.
I would probably recommend some of the 2nd and 3rd tier retro rip offs of Mario/Sonic or Mortal Kombat that circulated the SNES/Playstation era, are realize just how bad they really were. (a rather reliable cure for hipster-ism) If he is in to modern games, then I would recommend crappy budget titles like Neverdead or Ride to Hell: Retribution and dare him to say that they're shit, as hipsters usually disregard common knowledge, much less popular opinion.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
Gone Home is one of the more pretentious games out there nowadays. Braid also. Hipster games are pretty much art games. No real substance, but some deep philosophical bullshit that has little to nothing to offer in terms of gameplay. Like the game Journey. Fuck that game.
That Scout is a Soldier!
Go with older games based on movies that didn't warrant making a game that also hasn't been reviewed. No one talks about them and if someone says "They made a game based off of that?" They'll get that warm gooey feeling inside of them that repulses everyone. Here's a few examples:
Cool world -NES, SNES
Star Gate- Game boy
You can also go for older computer games that were simply overlooked because another game got more attention.
Birds Born in a cage think Flying is an illness - Alejandro Jodorowsky
