How much do you tip?

How much do you tip? 2014-12-12 16:11:50

Just a random question out of curiosity I personally always try to tip around 15% of whatever I ordered (well, for delivery orders anyway...) unless the the delivery was particularly quick or slow.

My Dad always tips 2 dollars, no matter what... As in, literally, no matter what. He justifies this by saying that John D. Rockefeller never tipped more than a dime... Which I'm 99% certain is him confusing historical fun facts (Rockefeller would GIVE OUT dimes for no particular reason aside from him having it to spare and to make people happy) but I don't know. :/

Yeah. Standard 15% for me. 20-25% if I liked the service and all that.

I 'tip' like this: "Get a real job with a proper wage!" jk

15-20%. Your dad is being generous if he never buys more than 13 bucks of stuff.

I know he has ordered more than $20 before... But I don't think he does that too often.

10% tip is the norm. I will tip less if the server does a crappy job.

If his average meal is $13.34 or less, he's actually being generous.

Usually 20%, unless they were really terrible. I also round up. So if 20% is like $5.64 I just go $6. I'd rather give them a few extra cents than a few less.

I never go to restaurants or anything like that and when I order food I pay it online but I always give some of the change I find in my room.

This is also how I generally tip

You hand over actual change as a tip? Have you ever gotten punched in the face or had the change thrown back at you?

A friend of mine got fired after throwing change at a cheap customer.

Not the change that they give, I just meant coins in my room.
Most of my money is on my savings account so I don't really have money.

No one has ever complained about the tips, there was this one time that a guy said "You're supposed to give me a tip now"
I gave him a tip because I was 14 and I wasn't really good at saying no at the time.

I don't really order that much, maybe around 4 times a year or something, usually my parents order the food or answer the door and give tips.

TL;DR
Not really, other than keep the change I never gave the delivery driver their actual change as a tip.

I rarely tip below 20% but I'll tip 25-30% if the service is outstanding.

Response to How much do you tip? 2014-12-12 20:14:44

If I'm there by myself I usually tip around $2. If its with a group of people say 4-6, each chip in $1-2 cause you know, we are college students.

Depends on the service, average of 25-30%.

15%.

25% if they don't do the birthday song bs.

At restaurants, I double the tax and round up, so 15-20%. At counters, if I tip at all, it depends if I have any ones handy. If I pay in cash, I'll often just leave the change. Both instances require a modicum of courtesy.

I don't tip because I'm never the one paying for meals.

I don't think I've ever tipped. It isn't really a concept which makes sense to me as we're paying for a service and it seems weird that etiquette would force us to pay more with an unspecified amount. Still, I haven't really had the chance to tip before because I pay for everything by card. I'd assume I'd take the same kind of approach as your dad and not tip any more than £5.

Response to How much do you tip? 2014-12-13 00:44:18

typically a little over 15% like 18% unless im really broke and then i kind of just dump out whatever couple dollars i have but i rarely eat in restaurants.

i skipped tipping once and next time i had the waitress i tipped her like $30 on a like $14 meal... i felt bad...

15% rounded up to the nearest quarter. It might not seem like a lot to some of you, but around here it's a lot and it's appreciated. Trust me. I'm very welcomed most places around here. Plus there's a big difference between rich states and poor states. This here is a poor state. Sometimes entrepreneurs from rich states forget that fact and get angry when they can't charge those rich state prices around here. New Yorkers are particularly bad about this.

My apologies to any non-douchey New Yorkers out there, but my local experience with them has been mostly ones who come down here and then get pissed because it's not exactly like New York. No shit sherlock! What the hell did you expect? rofl! Greedy asses who come down here because stuff is cheaper, but then expect to be able to charge those New York prices when people just aren't going to pay that around here, and get mad about it and act entitled as all hell.

So if you're from New York and you're not an entitled douchebag, my condolences. But also hopefully you can understand why I'm generally not too fond of New Yorkers. It's also possible just the douchebags move down here or something. Good thing is they usually don't stay long. Bad thing is there's always more coming in to replace the ones who leave.

I bet you do though. Or you just don't ever eat at restaurants more upscale than fast food. You don't have to tip. But if you get a reputation for not tipping you're going to make a lot of enemies. And these enemies would be the ones making your food. Just remember that.

Not really customary to tip where i live. But you're right, i barely ever eat in restaurants so i wouldn't know.

I remember when I first came out and tipped. Previously, I just went to fast food restaurants where you didn't do that. I know it's technically optional in other places, but don't remind me of that "Reservoir Dogs" scene. I decided to do 10 to 15%. 10's a good even number and easy to calculate, but it seems like most people do a little extra.

I don't go by % it's just as much work to bring a plate of lobster as it is to bring a burger. Toh
At being said I usually tip 10 to 15 dollars depending on the scale of restaurant, I worked at a restaurant and now work fast food but the waitress' do a lot more than just bring you your meal and drinks that you don't see and get paid about half minimum wage. So they make a descent living on tips but with out them the make shit, and most of them are single and/or young mothers
