alot of games here use pixel sprites others use sprites that seem to be hand drawn so which is better. i personally prefer pixel sprites but thats just me but i have seen hand drawn work very well and not just in point and click choose your own adventure interactive story games either.

I personally like when the art is done in a anime-like style.

I've seen way too many pixel games these past few years. I don't mind when it's stylistic but it's becoming more and more of a gimmick, to the point of being overdone. I prefer plain old cartoon graphics. Hell, I'd even opt for ASCII graphics before pixel art at this point.

If the sprites are actually custom-made, then definitely pixel! There are way too few of those.

It really depends on how it's done. I really love both styles of drawing.

Old 8-bit pixel games were pretty shitty, but new, more meticulously crafted pixel games like Metal Slug, those just never grow old! Just look at those pixels! The visual limitations in different eras make some games age fast... but not pixel. :P

Hadn't played any of those awesome other examples you mention, they look good... Shantae looks a bit like Aladdin too. Though it might not classify as one of the most elaborate Pixel games, it is one of the timeless ones. Also Cave Story, made pixel by pixel by Pixel. :P

Yes, yes. Many people enjoy the use of "pixel" sprites, many people don't care and others wish for the author to die in a fire. In all aspects it is simply part of the visual media accompanying the game, rarely being part of the mechanic (instead being a majority of the mechanic). For some it's just convenient and cool looking to them which isn't wrong - nobody is doing much with 8 bit or 16 bit art and it will be a lost art down the road.

Oh no your thinking of the origanal shantai, pirates curse is one of the sequels and has sprite work on par with metal slug its for download in the 3ds shop. i played the the black and white version of cave story on my wii before they updated the graphics so i cant say i know first hand how good they are but i have seen the screen shots and i am impressed. in fact alot of the indie games on the 3ds shop have awsome sprite work.

anouther one that has good pixels is grinsia its a top view type. an interesting one that also has interesting pixels is 1001 spikes its an 8 bit done in modern times but its not the nostalgic type of 8 bit it is done amazingly well and makes 8 bit look an actually desirable design aspect for the modern gamer.

Pixel stuff ftw!

Most artists don't bother with pixel stuff because it is a pain to make. It's a dying art in the digital world. For that reason... Pixelated art is awesome. (In Games)

I hate pixel shit so much due to overuse and how bland it looks because people keep using bad color palettes with it..

Was Cave story more in the lines 16 bit detail ?It has it's own distinctive style compared to some other stuff released on the nes.

Ah yeah, that looks a bit more visually elaborate! Nice. Cave Story was indeed pretty impressive, though I haven't played the upgraded console versions at all, just the original release for PC. Hearing the stories of how long it took to make (something like 6 years?) just makes me appreciate it all the more. :)

Grinsia hmm... from the screencaps I see it seems pretty normal, but maybe there's more under the surface. Titles like Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy... even the Pokemon games come to mind. 1001 sprites looks like a fresh interpretation of the old games! Similar, but somehow with much more clarity. Reminds me of this.

Other great pixel games: any newer Castlevania release, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP and Retro City Rampage.
