There wasn't much social media back then, internet was still some-what "underground" I guess. Not as much as during the late 90s with angelfire websites, but it didn't have as much popularity as it does now (compared to early 00s). It was a smaller niche.

To be honest, I didn't mind most of the types of images that started the trend of calling anything with a caption a 'meme' (Advice Dog, SAP, Courage Wolf, e.t.c.). I'm always still sort of annoyed when people use the term 'meme' to refer to a singular picture ("Check out this hilarious meme!" in reference to a specific image) as opposed to the whole usage of its image macro.

What was that one recording of that awkward kid who was trying to get a date on the Internet? I think his name was Brian.
