Best Games Of All Time As Of 2014!!

The developers and the industry analysts both agree that 2015 is going to be a HUUGE year for gaming, possibly even revolutionary. So, we here at Beakerboy Studios decided to make a list for the current top games of all time (as of 2014) before the big 15 hits and changes everything. I am going to limit the list to 20 games, because this is obviously the most competitive list ever! Each post will have a new game, which makes a total of 20 posts. Also we are indeed qualified to disclose a list of such a nature because we've been gaming nonstop since the early 2000's, and games made before then did not fly off our radar. We played all the crown jewels, without exception. We take into account 5 factors when looking at what games should be considered the top 20 games of all time as of 2014.

The grading criteria for this list is as follows:

Rust or Will It Rust?
A game should be able to stand the test of time. We decide how much rust the game has on it, or take a guess at how it will rust over time, particularly if it is a recent game.

Score
The sound of a game is so crucial that some people actually play some games mainly for its music.

Story/Plot
A fantastic game has a gripping story that fills you with emotion or feeling.

Gameplay
In this section we discuss how fun the game is.

In this section we mainly discuss how the game was designed in its own right, meaning, we decide how well the game accomplished what it originally set out to accomplish.

20. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
We were hesitant to give a Final Fantasy game such credit, but this one, at least, deserves it! The heart of the game is in its witty and humorous writing.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
The game was remade in HD in 2012 for the PC. So for the people that missed it in 97, NO, the graphics are not bad. They feel exactly as how they should, detailed, but comical.

[Score]
The music is certainly a high note. I could listen to the "fight" music for hours.

[Story/Plot]
The game is driven by Cloud, a guy who worked for a bad but serious organization called SOLDIER. Then he quits and works for a terrorist group instead, and along the way he deals with a lot of personal conflict. Then, he goes and saves the world, the end.

[Gameplay]
There isn't much exploration to do but it isn't required. Running around meeting people, battling random things, progressing the story and laughing at the jokes is more than enough to do.

[Game design]
Final Fantasy VII is supposed to be an epic, funny adventure that this guy Cloud goes on, and saves the world and shit. And that's what it does. So, long live FF 7 (until next year when everyone forgets past games)

19. Pokemon Gold/Silver (1999)
The best pokemon game ever made. Hands down. It puts modern pokemon games to shame.

this is not a game that has or will 'rust' because modern pc can enhance the game graphics several fold with emulator. Aside from that, it already looks and feels exactly how it should.

[Score]
the score of pokemon is always grand but in this particular title it is the best pokemon could possibly have.

[Story/Plot]
you play as yourself, and in the pokemon universe you aspire to be the most legendary pokemon trainer ever lived. good luck cause you're faced with gym leaders, fellow pokemon trainers, and terrorist organizations.

[Gameplay]
You get to explore the world and you can go pretty much anywhere. If a particular area will progress the story, it will remain blocked off until you do what you need to do before you can progress the story.

[Game design]
Pokemon is a kind of game that expects you to grind experience for hours and enjoy it. But what if I told you.... You will?

18. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Skyrim didn't get a bunch of game of the year awards for nothing. It truly is an adventure like nothing made before.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
Skyrim has pretty visuals. It could easily pass as a game released today. It may look slightly aged in 10 or 15 years, but modern pc can always enhance the visuals of a game to something better than it was before, which should have a big impact on how the game looks in the future.

[Score]
The music could have been better, honestly, but you just have to take it for what it's worth, which is nothing short of awesome.

[Story/Plot]
There are many branches that you can follow in the plotline. You can join different military factions and destroy the others single-handily. You can go anywhere, do anything, help anyone, kill anyone, etc. The amount of side missions is more than the main story, but you wouldn't even really consider them side missions because a lot of them are more epic than the main story, just not as long. You'll feel like a real warrior when you slice someone's head off. Or you can burn them to death with magic you learned from the college of winterhold, do whatever...

[Gameplay]
You free roam the giant map and can fast travel to any location you previously visited. At locations you'll find a variety of things to do, people to meet, kill, mysteries to solve etc. You collect items such as weapons, health potions and food, scrolls that grant you special powers, etc. there is a lot of talking to do and sometimes it feels annoying to hear the same voice actor talking for a hundred different stupid characters. Either get more voice actors or delete some unnecessary characters lol

[Game design]
Skyrim took on a challenging thing and for a game in 2011 it did a damn fine job that no other game will likely accomplish for quite some time. That thing would be creating an open world where the player can decide the fate of the people's lives inside it and become anyone. Skyrim created a lot of fans that had nothing to do with the Elder Scrolls before, so let's hope that a future developer team takes the formula and does something even greater with it, until then, enjoy Skyrim.

17. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009)
The best Uncharted game and one of the best games made for the PS3.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
Absolutely not. The game looks amazing and by the time it does not, there will be an easy way to emulate it on the PC and stimulate the visual effects.

[Score]
A standard soundtrack. Nothing too special.

[Story/Plot]
As silly as the game's storyline realistically is, the characters will take hold of you and make you care. This game is something Christopher Nolan would have made. Nolan North, guy voicing main character Nathan Drake, is more popular than a lot of Hollywood celebrities for a reason.

[Gameplay]
It is completely linear for its intents and purposes. An action driven (movie) game that will suck you in until it is over.

[Game design]
Movie games, game movies, or whatever you wanna call them are only made better by advancing technology. But take a character like Nathan Drake, and the story telling of Naughty Dog, and you have a game that doesn't give a shit about technology anyway.

16. Half-Life 2 (2004)
Welp, you just can't have a top games list without including Half-Life 2. HL2 is arguably the most critically acclaimed game ever made, and it certainly does deserve its praise. I can't say that it revolutionized the genre because, well, practically no games took a look at HL2 and said "I can do that!" Instead, I should say that HL2 was a revolution for the genre. It reminded gamers to take pride in gaming, if nothing else.

HL2 has extremely dated graphics but they were updated by a popular mod called FakeFactory's Cinematic Mod. So, there is nothing to complain about here.

Average.

[Story/Plot]
you are Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who fucked up an experiment and thus let loose aliens into the human world through a worm-hole. And on top of that madness, an evil organization called the Combine has taken over and wants world domination, so uhm good luck ehehe..

[Gameplay]
The game has an ominous feel to it, especially when you have to start fighting for your life against the infestation of head crab zombies. It has to be the best part of the game really, the dark sinister atmosphere, which is only created because of the silent protagonist role that Gordon Freeman takes.

[Game design]
HL2 sounds epic, looks epic, feels epic, and is also 100 percent epic so uhm yeah.

15. The Last of Us (2013)
First off, I gotta get something off of my chest. The zombie infection apocalypse end of the world shit is the most over used fucking thing ever to disgrace just about every fucking medium there is. Most of the attempts at making such a situation realistic and believable just face palm themselves a thousand times at the same time somehow. HOWEVER, The Last of Us is undeniably the light that shines in that dark dark room that we call the zombie infection apocalypse end of the world shit cliche. It is so well made, polished, and faith-restoring (thank you Naughty Dog) that it gets a spot on this list.

Sony recently remastered the game for the new PS4 console, so it looks even more beautiful than it did on the PS3. If you plan to wait and see if this game ever can look bad, don't hold your breath.

[Story/Plot]
Joel is the main character, struggling through lots of internal conflict since his family has all died due to the infection and he has to live a life of crime just to get by in the post-apocalyptic world. He one day encounters a girl who needs help and there you have it, Joel found a substitute for his dead daughter.

[Gameplay]
You will have to strain your eyes to see if you can spot any faults in the game's animation of movement of everything omfg aijdaosdjasopdjasdoj, as you progress through this linear story, you choose how to fight your combat situations in virtually any way you want to. Create Molotov cocktails or first aid kits, it is up to you. Stealth, stealth murder, or just a shootout, up to you.

[Game design]
Naughty Dog took on the challenge on making a good "zombies exist" universe and actually pulled it off because well it is Naughty Dog. They crafted it to about as good as it could possibly have been crafted to for its purpose for delivering a thrill ride from beginning to end and Joel tries to figure out just what the fuck he wants to do and shit, so yeah.

14. Sleeping Dogs (2012)
In one swift stroke of a game release, Square Enix holds up Rockstar and brings Rockstar down on its knee to break every bone in its body. Okay well that was dramatic, but basically, Sleeping Dogs is what GTA always wanted to be but Rockstar sucks too much to make a very fun game. I think that company is a little OCD, but anyway, if you ever wanted to feel like you were controlling Bruce Lee in a video game, Sleeping Dogs is the only outlet you'll get the feels. This is one of the best sandbox games ever, but what puts it on this list is mainly the dramatic story that actually makes sense compared to most other games of the same nature. It's as if the developers actually cared about the game when they were making it! Praise the sandbox game god.

The game has a lot of possible optimization and even when you max it to ultra, you can further enhance it with your graphics tools. It also has support for stereoscopic 3D. But going beyond the ultra settings of this game will be too much for the modern PC for a very long time, in my opinion. So yes it gets the stamp of approval of not being rusty!

Awesome. The game's musical theme songs are pretty epic.

[Story/Plot]
The main reason this game made the list. This game is a cop drama, and an amazing one. It tells the story of Wei Shen, a guy who had a troubled childhood in the hood of Hong Kong, but was taken in by the United States police force when he moved to the states, and eventually he became a detective. Now he's being sent back to Hong Kong to work as an undercover operative to take down the biggest gang, mainly because he grew up there and knows what to do and what to say to stay alive in Hong Kong when around dangerous people. The gang is involved with sex trafficking and drug trade with the United States and many other places.

[Gameplay]
You can go and do whatever you want. You won't randomly get 4 stars of "wanted" like in that crap GTA game. You can do a plethora of optional missions that include a variety of assignments, but the real meat is in the main story. You will be able to use lots of different realistic Kung-Fu, and the realistic brutality of this game goes to a high height, so if you're queasy, AVOID.

[Game design]
Sleeping Dogs is a masterpiece for its time. You have to give props to the actors since they are mainly responsible for bringing the game to life. In my opinion the purpose of this game was to make Rockstar hate itself, and it definitely pulled that off!

13. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
There is certainly something Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has over all the other games on this list, and it is how many times the protagonist of the game saves the world. Gabriel is an anti-hero in the Castlevania universe who is destined to kill the Lords of Shadow, and he does so in style. This game is dark, gritty, epic, and it feels good too.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
The visual fidelity of this title is remarkable. It is not the absolute best in polygon count but instead perhaps the art style, and that is what counts after all.

[Score]
Excellent, but could have been better I think.

[Story/Plot]
Gabriel Belmont, the protagonist, is sent on a mission to save the world from the Lords of Shadow. He believes the corruption of the world caused by the Lords of Shadow is the cause of his wife's death, Mary. He wants to save his wife from death, and believes he can do so when he acquires the powers that the Lords of Shadow possess. The narration by Patrick Stewart really carries it along well.

[Gameplay]
You are guided through each environment, being forced to battle many different kind of fantastical creatures, including gigantic bosses. I think the epic boss fights are what makes this game, to be honest. The combat system is the best I have honestly ever seen in a single-player video game.

[Game design]
This is a journey into fantasy, but it's so damn epic, I would assume the developers are all fans of Lords of The Rings. Well, for what resources it had available it is nearly perfect. The combat system, the story, everything.

12. Mass Effect 2 (2010)
The Mass Effect series regrettably got destroyed with the third installment, but that does not take away from the success of the second. You do need to play the first game to receive the full impact of the second, however, and it requires a lot of time input. But this wouldn't be number 12 on the list if it wasn't worth it, and then some. It is truly one of the best single-player RPG games ever made.

the best part. you'll be so hooked to shepherd's struggle that you'll be playing the game for several hours every day and then when it finally ends you'll wish it was longer like no other time before.

you can go and do whatever, but it isn't a sandbox. more like a open world RPG where you are going to have the same final result, more or less, but how you get there can vary greatly. lots of action and satisfaction to be had :)

[Game design]
ME2 is amazing beyond words. if you care at all for groundbreaking masterpieces, you care about this one.

11. Assassin's Creed (2007)
It was hard to figure out whether the AC game heralded as one of the top games of all time should be the first one or the second. Ezio might have been given a few more polygons, but Altair's journey is where the heart of Assassin's Creed is. This is arguably the best science fiction action adventure games ever made.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
No.... It looks beautiful today, and tomorrow, you can use resource consuming enhancements to make it look beautiful once again.

Nothing special.

[Story/Plot]
It launches the story of Desmond Miles. He is kidnapped by an evil corporation who puts him into a machine that reads his DNA and unlocks his ancestor's memories. Inside this machine called the Animus, Desmond is able to walk in the footsteps of his ancient ancestors, which starts with the most powerful assassin that ever lived, Altair. Altair begins as a complete jerk. He's arrogant and blind and he ends up being responsible for an enemy invading his homeland and massacring it. After that, he was put to death. But not really, though. He wasn't killed. Instead, he was tasked with saving the world from a huge holy war that would wipe out most of the world by assassinating all of the men trying to start it. And as he goes through his journey he realizes all his mistakes, blah blah blah yeah just play it.

[Gameplay]
You will have to start off with limited abilities, but as the game progresses you get more and more until you truly feel like a powerful assassin. A variety of missions, some claim to be repetitive, but you play this mainly for the narrative. Don't get me wrong, the combat is probably the best in this game than in any other AC game.

[Game design]
The game fits the bill as a science fiction epic that everyone should know about. I lost count of how many times I played through it.

10. Super Meat Boy (2010)
this is a rather special game.... It's also the most perfect game on the list. It is perfect in the sense that nothing in this game can happen that the developer did not intend. Every little pixel is right where it should be. Every little movement and button you press does exactly what it should do, and result in exactly what it should result in, making this game "perfect." Although it is easier to pull that off with a 2D platformer than a 3D anything, the credit is due.

[Rust or Will It Rust?]
No, the way Edmund McMillen designs things makes them just about timeless.

[Score]
The music. The music. The music. The music. THE MUSIC. Must listen. To the music. (11/10)

[Story/Plot]
Welp, meat boy's girlfriend was captured by a fetus, so he has to go after her and save her. The game is wrought with some of the best humor in any video game... lol.

[Gameplay]
This is the main reason why it is on the list. Every single person calling themselves a gamer should test themselves against Super Meat Boy. It is an extremely difficult game, but with practice you can beat it. It may be hard, but it is not unreasonable. The levels are so short, that failing doesn't bother you too much since you were only set back by several seconds.

[Game design]
SMB is the most "perfect" game on the list. It isn't the best game, but it is the most "perfect" game. That is why it is among the top 10.

9. God of War III (20010)
The epic finale of the God of War saga. More beautiful than most games to date, and packing enough epic to put Star Wars and Lord of the Rings both to shame. This bloody adventure should remain avoided only by idiots who don't understand what the definition of epic is or people who are too queasy to see the gore.

No... Never.

[Score]
Skillfully orchestrated music. It had to have costed a fortune to produce, and they had some of the best musical talent there is to write all the songs.

[Story/Plot]
You follow Kratos as he makes his last stand against the gods of Olympus who betrayed him so grotesquely. They made him kill his innocent family. And they made him kill tons of innocent people. And they killed him multiple times too. But Kratos was too pissed off to stay in the underworld so this time, he means business. He seeks to kill every god on Mt. Olympus as well as everything else that stands in the way.

[Gameplay]
The game is linear and cinematic, so it is like playing a movie. Of course.

[Game design]
The violence is over the top which is good. If they had me working with them I could have helped them make it even better in that regard lololol but anyway... You just have to want to sit down and enjoy the thrill ride of Kratos destroying everything. That's literally all it is.

8. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (2006)
There really isn't any other game than Dreamfall that holds such a special place in my heart. Or perhaps I should say no other game could rip my heart out like Dreamfall. Whatever, you get the picture. It's a journey you'll never forget. But what is it exactly? Dreamfall is an adventure game, and most certainly the finest one ever created. It is the sequel to The Longest Journey, which was fantastic but in my opinion merely set the stage for the big bang. You don't need to have played the first to understand the second, though, and we'll get into that later.

The game looks pretty when you max it out, and for an 8 year old game, that's pretty damn impressive. It has style and flow in its art and design and does what it needs to do with its visuals to create atmosphere. Will it rust? I regret to say that it will eventually "rust" but that time won't come for many decades. By then I'm sure the game will have been modded or remade or something, just like Half-Life 2.

There is not much to judge, and there doesn't need to be.

[Story/Plot]
It is a science fiction game, obviously and set in the future, where technology is really advanced. I believe that if The Wachowski Brothers directed a video game that had nothing to do with the Matrix, this would be the one. The adventure follows the story of Zoë Castillo whose life gets flipped upside down when she finds out that she is a shifter, a person who has the gift of traveling between dimensions. The two dimensions are Stark which is man-made and Arcadia which is a magical dimension. She gradually learns of a plot by an evil corporation to control the world through people's dreams and then decides to try and stop it. Well, I really need to replay the game, there's a lot I'm probably forgetting, and there's still a lot I don't understand. Also, Faith is creepy as fuck.

[Gameplay]
the game is mostly walking around exploring until you reach the person you have to talk to and then there is a lot of dialogue. in some scenes you will have to fight an enemy or hide from one. also, there are some puzzle parts. one of the puzzles was so confusing that i looked up online what to do.... but i blame that on my young stupid age, not the game.

[Game design]
PLAY THIS GAME. it'd be number 1 if I had my way, but this list is the culmination of what the whole Beakerboy Studio thinks.

7. Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Ah yes, the legendary Halo. It's arguably the greatest first person science fiction game ever made.

It received a graphics overhaul already so no it isn't rusty yet but in time I think it will need another graphics overhaul cause, well, that graphics overhaul wasn't much of an overhaul, honestly.

[Score]
Halo: CE has one of the best songs ever written for a video game as its main theme. It's only fitting since it matches the epicness of the gameplay/story. This is one song you need to listen with the sound up.

[Story/Plot]
You are Master Chief, a heavily modified soldier kept in a deep sleep for a long time, preserved and ready. Tons of years in the future, space travel is easy. You're asleep on the massive space ship "Pillar of Autumn" when suddenly the covenant, an alien race that is at war with humans, attacks the ship. You are waken up to only have enough time to grab the AI that the ship was using and get into an escape pod and bail out, crash landing on a mysterious halo planet. Master chief and his AI waifu Cortana then go exploring the mysterious ring world. But the covenant arrives and starts poking around, and they accidentally activate a sleeping parasite thing which is designed to wipe out all life in the universe. good luck

The god father of modern shooters. You get a shield, some guns, grenades, and a flash light. Happy hunting

Halo succeeded in accomplishing everything it wanted to, and revolutionized shooters.

6. Batman: Arkham City (2011)
This puts the last Batman movie they made to shame. This game represents what all comic book adaptations should strive for, across any medium. Period.

Not for one hell of a long time, at least. I don't know the UT3 engine well enough to say how the graphical quality will degrade over time. But at the moment, it is one of the best looking games to date.

[Story/Plot]
Batman is captured and his identity is revealed and Arkham city is plunged into chaos by bad guys. All of Batman's arch enemies are after him, including the Joker, Penguin, Ras Al Gul, Freeze, Dr. Strange, and more. but well he's somehow going to beat them because..... He's fucking BATMAN.....

[Gameplay]
You roam the open world and can complete side quests or keep trucking along the main story. All of the side quest stuff is just as fun. The combat system is as robust as ever.

[Game design]
Flawless victory, really. No video game holds a candle to this one as far as comic book adaptations go. The sheer amount of epic is overwhelming.

5. Threads of Fate (1999)
the best game ever made before the twentieth century. It is also the best single player game ever made. Starting off the top 5 games of all time as of 2014 we have THREADS OF FATE!

No. I used a very powerful PS1 emulator to make the game look super pretty :) it takes my poor rig all of its resources to pull it off.

You'll laugh, cry, get mad, get sad, get glad, and then laugh again. It's so feel good and humorous to play this game, but of course it balances that out with its drama, the death of loved ones, the falling of status, the end of the world, a chimera that is basically the most grotesque fucking thing you will EVER see in a video game (in a good way). You can play as either Mint, the female protagonist, or Rue, the male protagonist. Both protagonists are after a relic for their own reasons and come face to face with each other many times. Rue wants to revive his murdered waifu and Mint wants world domination. But shit gets complicated because there are a bunch of super powerful enemies that want to destroy the world with the relic. They can shape shift, bend time itself, create illusions, suck energy and whatever else. And it is basically all up to Rue to stop them. Rue is not human either, and he can whip all their asses so it's all good, though.

[Gameplay]
If you're Rue, you go around hacking shit up with a giant fantastical weapon called the Arc Edge. Rue can also shape shift into any monster he has slain. If you're Mint, you go around blasting stuff with big metal rings that fire magical spells, or using the rings as batons. The game is like an action adventure RPG, I suppose, because sometimes you have to grind monsters to level up before you can get to the next area.

[Game design]
This game is THE godfather of action adventure and rpg style singer player games. Every good modern action adventure game follows the formula that Threads of Fate created. Take Batman: Arkham City for example. Or God of War III. Or Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, or Dante's Inferno, or WHATEVER. What is the most important rule? You have to have an epic protagonist who is faced with a giant cast of super powerful villains who seem unstoppable. And Threads of Fate still remains number 1, despite all the modern gimmickry because it also has Humor, charm, character self-conflicts, better writing, etc. not to mention it simply has a better build-up of rising conflict mainly thanks to all of the epic boss fights (there's a shit-ton). save the world, rue...
This is most certainly an underrated game, as anything less than a 10/10 is quite unacceptable.

No, not really. In fact, most of the other games you have mentioned so far have legitimate cases to be in most serious gamers' top 20 list, {even if it they are mostly modern games so far} but I {and most others for that matter} don't think that Super Meat Boy should be on that list at all when there are more qualified games for that spot.

This has nothing to do with AAA vs. indie development favoritism, {God forbid we need to regurgitate the same elitist BS from both sides, but far more so coming from indie developers} it's simply a matter of quality.
