Photography General Thread! 2014-07-22 12:23:16

Hey, all. I was just fiddling around with my new flash last night, and I thought, "you know, I wish I had more places to talk about photography"; since it's not just my business, but a huge passion of mine. So I figured I'd start a thread where we can all talk about photography, gear, techniques, maybe post our work, newcomers can ask questions. A real community thing.

I run Nikon DSLRs, specifically a D5100, and I like older manual-focus lenses, I have a Nikon 35-105 with a macro setting, a Tamron 35-210 with a macro setting, and of course the default 18-55. I also have access to a D600, and that's a pretty rad camera.

So what do y'all run? I'd say cellphone cameras get out, but I wanna be inclusive.

All the info you gave about your camera just sounded like random words put together

WELL YOU SEE THE 600'S A FULL FRAME CAMERA, IT HAS A BIGGER SENSOR TO EMULATE 35MM FILM, WHICH LETS IN MORE LIGHT. IT ALSO GIVES YOU A DEEPER DEPTH OF FIELD. THE 5100 IS A CROP SENSOR, WHICH LETS YOU BOOST SOME FOCAL LENGTH IN LENSES DESIGNED FOR FULL FRAME CAMERAS.
Seriously, though, you can stay, this is for all photographers, as a lot of it is theory, too.

As long as it's not film. Fuck that hipster shit.

I've been using a Lumix DMC-TZ30 recently. Don't really know what I'm doing, so I'm certainly not making the most of it, but it seems to produce nice enough images and the 20x zoom seems pretty impressive for a compact camera.

I haven't really gotten around to taking it anywhere interesting yet, but that should change soon.

But that's incorrect.

The larger 35mm sensor on a full-frame camera yields a shallower depth of field, not a deeper one.

Smaller sensors like the one in the D5100 do not "BOOST SOME FOCAL LENGTH". They simply record a smaller image than the full 35mm frame, which results in a tighter shot.

Shit, I knew it was one of the two.

If photography wasn't so competitive in how you have to be different from the others that are already photographers.... That's what I would be doing.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX510 HS. It's my first camera and it's just a hobby for me, so it's small size is pretty convenient.

This is a p cool picture I took while hiking.

Err....and can you defend that statement? Cos there are thousands of people that disagree with you....myself included.

Nowadays, it is very easy to take almost every picture I've seen that people label art.
Some pictures however still take "work" to get, so I will acknowledge those.

Also, Art should express emotion, so...a lot of pictures don't really qualify.

Okay, your turn to argue.

I'm not trying to argue. I was just saying I don't think you can write of all photography as not being artistic.

I am actually in accordance with you, photography is a lot easier now a days, with everything being digital, and post-processing etc...

I follow alot of photographers on facebook, and frequent alot of photography sites, and alot of what I see from 'professional photographers', I don't find visually attractive at all, yet others will like it, so, like most forms of art, it can come down to personal taste and preference.

The same can be said about art on canvas. Alot of the 'contempary art', or 'modern art' consisting of coloured lines or boxes on a blank canvas are still considered art, or even masterpieces by some, yet I've seen better crayon drawings from 4 year olds.
