So I got into a discussion about anime with my cousin the other day and found a pretty big difference in our ability to enjoy it. My cousin is openly an anime fan, while I tend to be picky about shows and very critical. A few of my biggest criticisms of anime were along these lines:
- Dialogue tends to have a complete lack of subtlety
- Target audience is being catered to tenaciously (ex. how often do kids in anime actually have parents?)
- Character's attractiveness is directly related to their plot importance
- Overall thought process of a typical anime character is downright neurotic
- Archetypes are insulting to the intelligence and frequently show misogyny and xenophobia
- Female voice acting is practically at chipmunk level
- Requires insane amount of suspension of disbelief
Looking back at anime that doesn't fit these categories, I was really only able to come up with Ghost in the Shell and Black Lagoon. Both shows are largely centered around grown adults rather than adolescents, and I think that makes a big difference. There are some other anime that I'll watch, but every other show is more of a guilty pleasure than anything.
So can anyone list some more mature anime in the same vein as the ones I listed?
If I offer to help you in a post, PM me to get it. I often forget to revisit threads.
