So I got into a discussion about anime with my cousin the other day and found a pretty big difference in our ability to enjoy it. My cousin is openly an anime fan, while I tend to be picky about shows and very critical. A few of my biggest criticisms of anime were along these lines:

- Dialogue tends to have a complete lack of subtlety
- Target audience is being catered to tenaciously (ex. how often do kids in anime actually have parents?)
- Character's attractiveness is directly related to their plot importance
- Overall thought process of a typical anime character is downright neurotic
- Archetypes are insulting to the intelligence and frequently show misogyny and xenophobia
- Female voice acting is practically at chipmunk level
- Requires insane amount of suspension of disbelief

Looking back at anime that doesn't fit these categories, I was really only able to come up with Ghost in the Shell and Black Lagoon. Both shows are largely centered around grown adults rather than adolescents, and I think that makes a big difference. There are some other anime that I'll watch, but every other show is more of a guilty pleasure than anything.

So can anyone list some more mature anime in the same vein as the ones I listed?

If I offer to help you in a post, PM me to get it. I often forget to revisit threads.

I don't think I've read a more accurate description of anime.

From what you wrote I think you will like gantz, requiem for the phantom, and darker than black, gintama (awesome comedy), hunter x hunter, and rurouni kenshin: trust & betrayal. Go on and try them out ^^

But don't some of the things you mentioned kinda apply to Black Lagoon, too? I dunno, I guess these are more for da growed ups.

Mushishi
Hundred Stories, A.K.A Requiem from the Darkness
Boogiepop Phantom
Paranoia Agent
Perfect Blue
Texhnolyze
Ergo Proxy

Either way, they're good.

Get outta here with that pleb tier taste. Moe is the SHIT, mang.

But if you insist, I recommend either Black Cat or Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Hadashi No Gen/Barefoot Gen

It's a movie, and the only anime I've watched-- but it tackles serious issues.
Seriously, go watch it.

Cowboy Bebop maybe? ... I don't know. I'm not really an anime person.

But yeah my first thought was you meant hentai when you said "mature anime" lol.

Well, the first one was definitely much better. I still enjoyed the second a lot, but I didn't like how it ended. Baccano is another good one of you like that. And Michiko to Hatchin.

The new female protagonist irritated me for some reason. I've watched baccano, will try out the other one you posted ;).

Haven't watched it yet but I heard Monster is pretty mature.
