If you and a very good friend were in a bad situation, and it was either you die or your friend die, who would it be?

I would choose myself.

I can honestly not say.

Its all well and good SAYING that we'd be the friend to sacrifice ourselves, but until you're in a life and death situation you really don't know because your primal instant to survive could kick in and then your mind has no say whatsoever.

I'm always quick to sacrifice things for others, but the friend that came to mind I know for a fact wouldn't sacrifice their life for me, so me.

We do have control over what we think or what we feel or what we do. So yes you would be able to have a say in what happens. We are not robots to our minds, our minds are robots to us.

Whichever of us has more to live for, so long as i'd be in a collected enough state of mind to consider that.

Hear it all the time, but what point does that prove then my point. We have the choice to fight or flight. Pretty much everyone flights, some fight. Our minds don't just say, when we are born, "Oh I wanna be flight". No It doesnt work like that. We choose as we grow. We are not robots, we have a free choice.

This. I'm gonna be a dad soon and my family loves the shit out of me. My best friend is single and isn't quite as close with her family (from what I've seen). As much as I love the gal I couldn't leave my world behind.

I would, only for the closest and most trusted of my friends on the condition that I be allowed to donate some of my sperm into a bank where said friend must impregnate his future wife with my seed and bear a child. Preferably a son. That is the debt he would owe me for his life.

If that can't be arranged, well fuck it ill take one for the team. See yall in hell, assholes!

This is totally circumstantial.

If my 'friend' was the cause of us being in the bad situation, then this friend would have to go. if it was equally our fault, then Jesus died for our sins

I can't say for sure, I do firmly believe that I would sacrifice myself for my best friend but I don't know if I really would in the situation

I don't like these kind of questions anyway

I'd kill my friend of course. Then I'd kill everyone that knew about it so no one can witness against me. Then I destroy the evidence. Put oh no I missed crucial detail and now the police is chasing me, so I have to go into hiding. Discard my old life and start new one in the mountain. Get a job as a lumberjack. Maybe find me a girl, marry her and get some kids. Start a family. But tragedy strikes, she is unfaithful and even though I understand she get lonely while I'm out working in the woods I cannot contain my rage I grab my axe and plant it in her skull. The children saw the deed and are crying asking me their father "why daddy why!?". I see no way out, I must kill my children it's the only way. But unknown to me a friend was going to see me that night and he saw it all and reported me to the authorities.

I'm in jail now, waiting for the end. It comes soon, I know it. By every second that goes away my death approaches. A man comes and get me, he asks me "are you ready?" and I say with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat "is anyone?". He is silently for moment, contemplating something. He is disgusted by me. He then says "alright come here now" grabs me by the arm and put me in chains. Now we start the walk. The last walk.

We arrive. I sit down. A man says some words and I don't hear word of what he says, I'm lost in thought. In my own inner turmoil. Regret and despair fills me up now. It's all I am right now.

The man gives a nod to another. That's the signal. It's time. Now I'm going to leave this world as entered. Afraid and unsure.

Yeah that is what I would do

Loyalty is overrated.

Also everything is situational. It's a very accurate response which people have given saying "well it depends" basically, and it does. It's not a "one answer fits all scenarios".

I'd rather have both of us dying.

No sense in letting the other live if either one of us was going to go down.

But what's stopping me from saying yes to that and kind of...Not doing it after you're dead?

Anyway, I sadly lack any really strong reasons to live so I might as well. Chances are said friend would probably enjoy his/her life more than my depressing ass and thus his life would be more valuable.

..If (s)he's even more depressing than me however and isn't that great a friend anyway and wouldn't even do the same for me, fuck him/her.

If it was my current best friend, or any previous friends, I'd choose myself without second thought. I would choose a friend with the same ease if I felt they had more value than I did.

Why do you keep using the phrase "We are not robots"?

Its a primal animal instinct to survive not a robotic one. Can't fight biology. If our life is threatened, there truly is no way of knowing how we'll behave. You can freeze up in terror and do nothing or make an ultimate sacrifice, in moments like that its not about what you think you'll do, but just simply what you do. Compare it if it helps to that "Say the first thing on your mind game" when someone says a word and you say a word back. You know; "Dog" "Cat" "Black" "White". Sometimes you say words you don't think you'd say in response but in a split second when you can't process what is happening you just do something.
