Am I the only one who hates these types of people who do this shit? Not only is it unsafe, but it is a burden for people like me who drive.
Literally, I almost hit a guy last night because he was J-walking and was wearing all black, and what's even more stupid is that he was 20 feet from a legal crosswalk.

Dunno how street laws work, I just walk when there are no cars near and fast enough to possibly run me over-- also when the pedestrian crossing light blinks green.

Well obviously if you have a pedestrian walk sign then that's the perfectly legal way to do it and not jaywalking. If there is a crosswalk but no such sign, it's also perfectly legal to cross there and not considered jaywalking (cars are supposed to stop) although you shouldn't assume they'll stop for you in crosswalks.

Other than that depends on the street type I think. Like neighborhood-type streets that aren't major streets? Not really considered jaywalking. Major streets? Not a big deal as long as you're smart about it. I mean cop could technically give you a ticket so don't do it right in front of a cop. But otherwise they're not going to care so much.

I J-Walk because my town was designed by an idiot. We don't have crossing signals, or even traffic lights at most of our crosswalks, so it's just about as safe as walking in the middle of street anywhere.

Luckily I live in a small town where people are nice enough to stop for you if they see you standing there waiting to cross.

Sometime you have to jaywalk. Ever walked on the street for almost 10 minutes and you couldn't find a single red light? Ever ran back to your workplace because you only have 15 min break?

I guess I was lucky enough to not get hit by any vehicle or get fined. But I only jaywalk when it is necessary.

Where I live (Central New York) you cannot be legally held accountable for injury or death if you accidentally hit someone with your car when they are crossing the road if they are not in or near a crosswalk.

I have yet to visit a city in Kansas that doesn't allow J-walking. At least in downtown areas where you often have to park across the street from where you want to go. My town doesn't have any laws about it, or if it does it's not enforced.

Are you serious? That's pretty messed up. So you could just go around gunning people down and as long as they end up in the street not near a crosswalk they can't charge you with anything? That can't be right. Sounds like a convenient way for less scrupulous people to dispose of people they don't like.

I just did so two times today on one of the busiest streets in my area. Near my house the only crosswalk is on an intersection with another busy ass street and it's way less of a headache clusterfuck to just jaywalk farther down from the intersection, especially with all the construction always going on around here.

Well, it's pretty rare to run someone down and not be found guilty of vehicular manslaughter. And this only counts in cities of course. You have to genuinely have a case for it being an accident through no fault of your own - for example, they stepped out right in front of you and you attempted to break (visible at the scene via skid marks) but didn't have enough time. "I didn't see them" isn't usually a good enough reason unless it's pitch black and they're wearing all black clothes and there are somehow no street lights.
