I'm of the general opinion that it isn't bad, just boring.

I acknowledge that it's catchy, for the most part the music theory isnt anything new. Production value all has the same mixing to some extent, all meeting a certain standard in it's sound. But hey, they know what they are doing that's for sure, I just wouldn't say it's very innovative at all. I can't blame them though, why fix a system that has been working for them :p

Depend on what kind of pop. I say the classic pop music, especially those by Micheal Jackson are timeless.

nah

i don't like many of the big pop music artists, and i hate the industry behind it, but there's nothing necessarily wrong with pop or it's conventions on a musical level.

I don't necessarily hate a song if it's pop. But most pop songs are pretty boring if you ask me.

I have this issue where I cringe when I hear any song that just blasts out the four 'magic chords.' (vi IV I V) They are just so overused. And especially in pop.

Oh, or it could be another arrangement of those four chords. Another popular one is I V vi IV

I cannot argue that pop music doesn't get on my nerves. It isn't progressive in anyway really, and that is truly the thing that my soul speaks. The singers I hear on the radio have great tone(when they aren't using an autotuner), but there is pop music that I like such as John Mayer. His stuff is classic, and it is because it has worked before that they are using the model. Let us face it, pop music producers are in it for the money, and if you are going to take a risk with your investment, it should be on something that has worked well before. I don't blame them, and technically it is still music, but there are a lot people that just aren't interested in innovative or progressive music. It is the trend of the day that determines what is marketable, so by that logic, every type of music at one point in time in history was pop music.

Interesting how that happened.

I find it pretty lukewarm more often than not...and also poorly defined. Seriously, pop has been rock, punk, dance, rock again, punk again and then dance again. But I don't automatically hate anything that charts well (I automatically hate people who see 'top 40' and hate it immediately though), seeing as Deadmau5 has been in the Pop Charts, as have Daft Punk with Get Lucky, Rudimental, who honestly aren't the best group ever, but they had a popular DNB song in a 90% EDM scene, which is impressive as hell imo, Mackelmore & Ryan Louis had 2 hugely popular songs that I really liked last year, and Arctic Monkeys and Imagine Dragons had some pretty good songs come up on pop radio last year.

HOWEVER, for every song that charts that I do like, about 7 of them range from just boring to obnoxiously bad. There's a lot of formula in the music industry these days because people buy into something that's consistent, of course there was always formula to popular songs, but lets say we go back in time to the 80's and I'd say you'd notice a lot more songs breaking the mold and charting pretty favorably. And no, I'm not gonna bugger all over my post with 'blah blah 80's was best new music is automatically bad i am a massive wank', but as general observation you can't deny that modern pop music is a lot more focused towards a small group of styles that sell well. The internet has played a big role in that, because of piracy sucking up a lot of money from the industry. The internet wasn't gonna change, so the industry had to change, live shows became more expensive and frequent, blah blah you've heard this all before.

But regardless of the current state of the industry and whatever else, I'm not ignorant enough to say I hate pop

Then the same can be said at other chords used in other genres. Any chord is overused. We're running out of chords!

Yes those old pop musica are great! Todays pop music isn't good at all and the industry is terrible. Michael Jackson was the greatest pop music king.

Well, I guess I phrased that badly. The chords are fine but the problem is when they are such a major part of the song that it lacks melody. I really like chords but they need accompaniment!

I don't hate any genre of music completely. Maybe I'll only like a single song from a particular genre but I'd never refuse to listen to a song because of its genre. I prefer to judge a song on its own merits. Plus, while they are a quick way to identify the type of music you enjoy, I find genres to be an outdated labeling system a lot of the time. If someone wants to call their music a specific genre, I'll respect that. But personally, I think the music itself is all that matters. I see people getting caught up in what to label a song and it just seems so trivial to me personally.

As for what's typically considered pop music, I'm not a huge fan myself. I enjoy a catchy song here and there but I don't find myself listening to that music on a regular basis. Mostly, it has to do with the vapid lyrics. Songs that don't really mean anything just don't appeal to me for very long. I love Michael Jackson and I even enjoy Justin Timberlake a lot. "What Goes Around" is a fantastic song in my book. But I don't find artists like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry to be all that interesting. Catchy... but very shallow. I'd rather listen to a great trance song or something like (don't shoot me) "Ghosts N Stuff" if I wanted something super fun. And the lack of lyrics doesn't change that... it's just as thought provoking most of the time.

I'll always come back to classics like MJ or the Beatles. But most of the time, pop music is way too cheesy and repetitive. Fuck that shit.

Pop music, and especially its industry, is really fun. I have to have doses of it every so often to realize my place in the music world.

Well, it's not pop music that I hate, necessarily.

What REALLY grinds my gears is when songs decide that the lyrics (read: poetry) is the part of the song that's important, and the music only exists as a backing. The lyrics generally aren't even that good, either.

In this case, there is little originality and almost no sound of effort in the songs - they sound a dime a dozen, like somebody just slapped on the same loops again in a different order or with different instruments.

Admittedly, in some music, there are lyrics which are an integral part of the song and MUSIC. I tip my hat for the people who manage to do this, and respect it greatly. But these songs are EXTREMELY rare, to the point of being basically nonexistent (incidentally, if you know any please send).

tl;dr: Pop music needs to realize that there's music with the lyrics, and a song is shitty if the music is shitty - the lyrics (and vocals in general) are being used as a crutch. As a result, the music is like the slacker in school (American school, at least). Everybody pays attention to them and showers them with attention, giving them all kinds of support, while ignoring the shining genius music that should be allowed to shine.

Stuff.

I hate music that lacks sincerity or passion. There's a heaping pile of garbage out there in all genres. I hand pick what I like and avoid the rest.

Yes, with passion!
At least if you're speaking of the kind of stuff when googling 'best of pop [ year]' and heavily advertised music in general.

Well, for 99% of what i was forced to listen to through radio, bus, TV, fans, workplace, I've been hating those whining singers and their cheesy melodies since 1984 (and before that if i could). 99% because sometimes, there were songs that i enjoyed, that didn't seemed to be made for $ only, but my overall impression...

This kind of music has no soul, it's like following a recipe step by step (oh baby!♫), desperately trying to trigger fake emotions from the listener thus accessing their wallets, without bothering adding the secret ingredient that would make the experience unforgettable (in a pleasant way).
Hear it, Forget it, on to the next one, the next "talented" piece of advertised sh** of an artist, which sounds exactly the same as previous: garbage, but hey different, you know!
Also big numbers are better so buy it.

Sadly it's always been like this for any "top charts" music. $$$

I wonder if, when i say that i like electronic music, people assume:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCawU6BE8P8

I'm pretty optimistic, that there is pop music i could appreciate, just like any genre, something that has a real purpose and soul, not this fake stuff. I just haven't had the chance of discovering it yet.

Oh and remember it's my opinion, (opinions are like assholes etc...)
If you love pop, i won't hate you oooo-Ooooou!

I really like Pharrell Williams and the four really big hit songs he's been involved in recently (Get Lucky, Blurred Lines, Happy, Sing), but other than that I don't really follow the popular scene because a lot of it is crap. Of course, people could also argue that the four songs I listed are also crap.

Definately not inherently but modern pop, yes.. very.

I find it uncreative and generic, especially since the auto tune; talent is a word that has been removed from the genre so violently that i cant understand why people put the """"""""""""""artists"""""""""""""""""on a pedestal still.

Back in the day, when pop was a new thing it actually had talent and fresh sound, now it all sounds the same, like trying to wringe the life out of a already dead animal.
