When I first bought Half-Life 2 back in 2004, the requirements were only 1.2GHz CPU and 256MB RAM. Since then they have gone up to 1.7GHz for the CPU and 512MB for the RAM.
So when did this happen? And why did it happen?
I'm only asking this because it won't run on my vintage 1.5GHz Pentium 4 computer anymore.

They added the extra graphical effects from the episode expansions around 2010, I think.
It includes Phong shading and more advanced HDR.

You can most likely disable those with launch options, or force it to run a lower DirectX version.
