Toph and Sokka are dead. Katara and Zuko are alive. We don't know if Azula is alive or dead.
So 3rd season will show you the past, that time when they were still alive....
I don't think that will be a big part of it, but I would expect at least a little more of the past to be revealed.
For example it's like a in 1 Korra Season, then Amon's brother catched Korra, and then she appears in spirit world and saw Aang and Katara, Toph...And others... So they were dead, but she saw them in spirit world...
When Tarrlok kidnapped Korra, she meditated and saw into Aang's past. That was not the spirit world, it was something from one of her past lives. And again, Katara isn't dead. Have you forgotten her scenes in the present...including scenes with Katara speaking to Korra? You did know that nice old lady who was Tenzin, Bumi and Kya's mom was her, right? You know, Aang's kids?
So it's the same think in 3rd season, Zuko is dead, but Korra remembered him, and Season show it to us, or She appears in spirit world, and watches the past... But I think, that they were dead...
Again, when Tarrlok put Korra in the metal box, she was seeing an event from her own past life, Aang's life.

I'm so waiting for this season release OMG ... I have A lot of quoestions... So first of all...
1.Why "White Lotus" attacked Korra ???
2.Did I saw Korra metal bending ? ( watch the trailer very close )
3. I think that crazy girl with her face expressions are not Azula... How somethink sayed... I guess It's Azula's GrandDaughter or something like that...
4.I think, That I saw Ozai, in the trailer...
5. I saw Water bending girl in wooden cage, And just remembered that scene, in Avatar Aang, When crazy Old womad, learned Katara to blood bend...
6. And more quoestions... I just too lazy, to write them here
