Would you date a transgender? 2014-06-08 14:27:58 Reply

Awhile back, a friend of mine asked the group whether or not we would be willing to date a transgendered individual. Responses ranged from "Fuck that!" to "Maybe?" but were usually siding on the negative.
Personally, I was a little shocked by my own response. I'm a pretty big advocate for LGBTQDIA, but I hadn't given this particular question a lot of thought.
Would I date a transgender?
Truth be told, if I knew that a woman was once a man before I'd developed any interest in her... I don't think I'd be too inclined to explore that option. Maybe that's because I want kids with our faces. Maybe I'm just too straight to imagine my woman as a former man. Regardless of my reasoning, I was taken aback.
Of course, there are exceptions. What if I'd been dating her for quite awhile, and had developed significant feelings for her? Honestly, love is love. Attraction is based on sexuality, but love is not. Without that initial mental block of "This is not entirely a woman, and she does not have ovaries," all I really know is that I'm looking at a beautiful woman with whom I get along wonderfully. Once you begin to fall in love, who they once were physically should not have any bearing on your feelings. So, yeah, I'd move full speed ahead. I mean hey, we could totally have sex without contraception. And frankly, a person who has gone through an eye-opening experience like that is likely to be so much more dynamic than your average Joe/Jane.

So here is my question: Would you date a transgender? Would the circumstances affect your decision?

I wouldn't go out of my own way to do so, but in equal respects, I don't go out of my own way to "date" anyone.

Would the circumstances affect your decision?

Yes, most certainly.

Are you talking about transsexuals or transgenders? You make it sound like the former.

Well, another thing to note, is gender is a phenomenon of the mind, so as long as the person was also transsexual, I might date them if the situation arose. I don't pursue physical males, so the chance of me pursuing a non-physical female is pretty low.

But if I found out the person had been born physically male halfway into the relationship, I don't know what I'd think. If it had been denied (however it came up), I'd end the relationship as I had been lied to. If I found out late because it just never came up, I dunno. A person is not their body, sort of, but a relationship IS partly physical.

If they were relatively attractive, not crazy as fuck, and didn't plan on ever mutilating their genitals, I would. However, these seem to be some very rare circumstances.

Primarily transsexuals. Someone who has received operations to achieve the physical identity that matches their mental identity.
But, you're right, there really is a lot more to it than that. Like dating a man with a vagina, or a woman with a penis, especially if they're not interested in any hormonal changes.

That's transgender, not transsexual. Transgender means medical procedures, transsexual is no procedures.

Given I'm hopefully starting meds either next month or August, I guess the person dating me would have to be ok with it. As for me, as long as she's the kind of person I want to be with, I could care less if she was formerly a man.

Diagnosis
Transsexualism appears in the two major diagnostic manuals used by mental health professionals worldwide, the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM, currently in its fifth edition) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD, currently in its tenth edition). The ICD-10 incorporates transsexualism, dual role transvestism and gender identity disorder of childhood into its gender identity disorder category, and defines transsexualism as "[a] desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex, usually accompanied by a sense of discomfort with, or inappropriateness of, one's anatomic sex, and a wish to have surgery and hormonal treatment to make one's body as congruent as possible with one's preferred sex."[4] The DSM does not distinguish between gender identity disorder and transsexualism, and defines transvestic fetishism as a separate phenomenon which may co-occur with transsexualism. The DSM diagnosis requires four components:[5]

A desire or insistence that one is of the opposite biological sex (that is not due to a perceived advantage of being the other sex)
Evidence of persistent discomfort with, and perceived inappropriateness of the individual's biological sex
The individual is not intersex (although a diagnosis of GID Not Otherwise Specified is available, which enables intersex
people who reject their sex-assignment to access transsexual treatments)
Evidence of clinically significant distress or impairment in work or social life.

Nobody is going to judge you for saying no. Everyone can sympathize with the mixed emotions that come with a question like that, because they transcend even our non-traditional views on sexuality. It's an entirely new dynamic, and it can be uncomfortable for a lot of people.

That said, I personally think it's important that we acknowledge that not everybody is born in the right body. Regardless of whether you are personally attracted to someone who is affected by that circumstance, I do think it's their right as people to be accepted for who they are.

I'm just looking for legitimate answers, whether yea or nay, or somewhere in between.

By the way, to be intersexual is to have both male and female characteristics. Kind of like a "hermaphrodite," except that a hermaphrodite is fully male and fully female simultaneously. And... also mythical.

Check out Bunny Bennett from Steam Powered Giraffe. Not even because she's a mtf transgender, but because their music and act is freaking fantastic.

A bit rude and stereotyping but you're free to believe what you wish.

Kind of like vegans.

I like how there is a nice difference between vegetarians and vegans. Vegetarians are happy and ok with others not having the same diet as them. Vegans on the other hand feel a need to force their lifestyle down other people's throats any way they can.

The lead singer in this particular song is Bunny Bennett when she was still known as Rabbit, publicly identifying as male despite having begun the transition in her personal life a few years prior. Now she's female in the act as well.
