Guess who got a box of premiums 2014-06-01 19:25:47 Reply

Went to walmart and spent 15 dollars on a premium box of Yu-Gi-Oh cards. It has three packs with 5 cards in each pack, and every card is guaranteed to be a Gold Secret-Rare, as far as I know, the rarest cards they make.

I wonder what rarities I'll find inside.

i've always had a burning hatred for yu-gi-oh without ever actually knowing anything about the series. This has started since I was very young and still persists to this day, probably because I preferred to watch Pokemon and Sailor Moon as a kid (I obviously had great taste in cartoons). As much as I know how wrong I potentially could be, I am already 20 years into my life and I doubt my unwarranted burning hatred for this series is ever going to change, nor do i want it to. It is a deep part of me now.

I honestly have no idea how you play yugioh. I've never once dueled anyone, I've never took the time to learn what any of it means, and I'm not interested in a card game that requires a calculator, a small pile of scrap paper a coin and random items to use as counters. The fact that people can legitimately enjoy it as a game bewilders me, and all I remember about the show is the first two seasons and the early movies.

That said, I love collecting yugioh cards. I have literally tens of thousands of them, and they range from the most common of cards, all the way to the rarest cards in the world. One of my cards is one of only 82 ever made. They only made 82 of it, there are only 82 of them in the world, and I own one. I don't know why I like yugioh cards so much, I don't know why I have a child-like obsession with them, I just do, and I don't question it.

That's totally fair haha. I did the same thing with pokemon cards when I was a kid, but it was more of a fad with me than anything and I stopped collecting with my brother rather quickly. As of now I have a boner for collecting snes and old DOS games.

Yeah I was just thinking that, it completely makes them not rare now that they are just handing them out.

They made very, very few of these boxes. Rather than printing more of the Gold Ultra-Rares, they took ones already in stock and simply made a new pack art and put them in a cheap box.

See, when they print cards, whether they're new card or reprints of older cards, or just rarer variants of cards that already exist, they never release all of them, they keep a lot of them for later limited edition and 1st edition releases, it gets people to buy more of them without them having to go the extra mile of printing more out. The cards retain their value, they make more money than they usually would have, and I get to be happy.

Most people are comfortable paying in the upwards of 80-100 dollars for it, and one guy sold it to a collector for 250 dollars.

I got mine for 20 dollars, along with a shitload of other cards, it was in a limited edition bundle box.

Lol. Someone should totally mix up Yu-gi-oh, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, and similar trading card game cards (throw bootleg cards in there too) and try to play them in a game just to see people's confusion.

If you get a reaction, act all indignant and yell out "That's a legitimate card! I'm playing that card! You can't stop me!"

Well I can understand that. But think about it. They're introducing more of the card into circulation. Therefore theres more of them floating around and making the ones people already owned worth at least a bit less than they were before.
Does that make sense? I mean say I had one of those cards and got it in a pack of cards randomly years ago. There'd only be a set amount of those circulating so there'd be a higher demand for them.
Fast forward to now. The card is worth a bunch more than it was back then, but then these boxes pop up and more of the card I had is now available making the demand for said card go down a bit. Granted I could see people selling the ones from these boxes for slightly lower prices, but is there really a way to differentiate between the two? And whose to say they didn't release more of them than they are saying they did? For all you know they could have released a bunch of them all across the globe and slowly made them worth less and less than they initially would have been worth had you gotten each of those cards separately.
Hell my brother got one of those "Legendary Collection" things (I think thats what its called) that had all 3 Egyptian God cards along with special versions of Dark Magician, Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Red Eyes Black Dragon in it. And I honestly don't think those would sell very well considering the fact that they went ahead and released a bunch of those in those "collections". I feel I'd have a better time selling my Exodia piece or my "CMYK" card than I would with one of those.

Damn, nice. I went to Toys 'R Us (or however you spell it) and bought a set of five duelist packs and got pretty much nothing. Actually, they did have a Gold Box, but it was $20 so I didn't bother.

Well I can understand that. But think about it. They're introducing more of the card into circulation. Therefore there's more of them floating around and making the ones people already owned worth at least a bit less than they were before.

Nonono, when Konami releases the numbers for how many of a card there is, they also count the ones they still have themselves. So if they say that there were 10,000 printed, only 8,000 of them may be in actual circulation.

Fast forward to now. The card is worth a bunch more than it was back then, but then these boxes pop up and more of the card I had is now available making the demand for said card go down a bit.

The card would still be as valuable in the eye of a serious collector, because when they look at the amount that were printed, it includes the ones that Konami keeps after printing. There are just ever so slightly more of them, and are just a little bit easier to get, but they're still just as valuable to serious collectors who know how many of a card were made.

And you also have to take into account that there are 15 levels of rarity when it comes to YuGiOh cards, and each rarity of a certain card retains its value regardless of how many of another level of rarity becomes available. If there were 500 Ultimate-rare Dragon Master Knights ever printed, and then they released 2000 Super-rare variants of the same card, the 500 Ultimate-rares would retain their value. Even if they made 30,000 Ultra-rare Dragon Master Knights, those Ultimate-rares would still be just as valuable.

And then you have to take into consideration whether or not it's standard edition, 1st edition (apart of the first batch they ever made) or limited edition (only printed for a certain time period then never printed again). A 1st edition short print common is waaaay more valuable than a standard edition Super-rare.

I know my card economics bruv.

Those don't have a resale value because they were printed as a limited edition collection set. They do that every once in a while. I got one two, and cherish my holofoil limited edition god cards. There are lots of them, but think about this, if they made a million limited edition Lamborghinis, do you think that'd make them any less desirable? Sure, they'd be easier to get, a lot easier, but it's still a god damned limited edition Lamborghini. That's the way it is with the god cards in that set, they're less valuable, but it's still easy to love them the same.

I have 4 sets of the god cards, and now I'm gonna try to get the rarest set of all that I didn't even know existed until now, the Gold Secret rares. One set is the legendary collection limited edition, one set is limited edition ghost rares, one set was released with a new rarity they created specifically for a card set called Starfoil-rare which has a space-like pattern holographic across the entire face of the card.

I know you think that releasing a bunch of a certain card makes them less valuable, but it only makes the rarity that it was printed in slightly less attractive to collectors, and thus you're less likely to sell it for a lucrative price. When you've got 15 levels of rarity, and then 3 levels of rarity in each of those levels, it's kinda hard for Konami to make a major dent in the value of a specific card.

If this were 2004 and I had the mind of a 7 year old, I'd have been very, very jelly of you. But it isn't.
I had 2 packs of Yu-gi-oh cards with me, and I used to play it a lot "back in the days". And I'd have called you either ignorant or a moron since you said you didn't know how to play / duel with it, but then I realized that I used to do the same thing with Pokemon cards and figurines. Had the whole set, didn't do jack with it except throw some discs around and play Yu-gi-oh instead.

I heard there was a PC card game though. You had an option to "scan" your deck into the game, and by scan I mean you enter the little serial numbers near the bottom right corner (of the card or the picture, I forget) and then play with that deck.

The only problem that I could see with that is that all cards have a universal serial code, meaning that a common Dark Magician has the same serial code as an ultra rare Dark Magician.

Plus you could just look up cards you wanted and memorize the little 8-digit number. One thing I remember about pokemon cards that I thought was the coolest shit ever at the time is that some of them had a neat looking barcode on the side, and you could buy a card reader, plug it into your gamecube, and some games would let you literally scan your cards into the game. Coolest, shit, ever. Too bad I just never really liked pokemon cards, they were too colorful and the card art was too inconstant. I always preferred YuGiOh because it's a lot darker (considering it's for little kids and they have super realistic dragon demons and doomsday bringers and god-beasts and shit) and the art is super realistic. Aaaand they always had amazing as shit holographics. Ultimate rare cards are embossed with holofoil, when you rub it you can feel the thousands of tiny ridges.
