You ever move into a new home and had a book case but could never get it to look "full" enough? So you bought a bunch of random books at a Half-Price Bookstore and then placed them on your shelves NEVER to be touched again? Yeah, I've never done that...but I know a guy who knows a barber who's cousin has done that. Yep, so I-err this cousin's family has done a lot of that and rummaged through these virgin pages years afterwards. I've come to find they aren't exactly "good" books, rather just the run of the mill Murder Mystery, Romance, Cook books, etc. They've littered the shelves for ages but who knows, maybe I'll like one of them or something, it just seemed weird to have them there and have never touched them, it's like they become part of the furniture and you just forget they can be removed.
I suppose its largely just for furnishing purposes but kinda feels like a lie. Like all of our guests are suppose to think we read the damn things. And I have to question whether they've read any of the ones on their shelves. So guilt kinda forces me to at least skim through them just in case, I dunno, the guests start to question me on a book I've got.
How awkward would that be?
"Oh you have x book? I love x book! Didn't you just love when x fought y on the z?! Who's your favorite character?"
"Oh yeah I love y, he's such a badass."
"Y's a woman..."
"...fuck." *jump out window*
Admit your bookish shame here. Would you pick out a book now and read it if I said I'd do the same, uh, that is get that cousin to do it too?
Those aren't books on those shelves, they're lies! Damned LIES!

I've recently been reading House of Leaves as well.
I still got to finish the last couple of books of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.

Every single book I bought from my local library that was made before the 50's.
I have about 200 books that range around the 10's to the 40's, and every single one of them was a dollar.
I've never bought a book just to fill out a shelf with no intention of actually reading it, but I do have a couple of things I bought but haven't read yet, chief among them being Michael Chabon's Telegraph Avenue, William Goldman's Adventures In the Screen Trade, and Stephen King's On Writing.
I also have some shit on my Kindle I haven't gotten around to yet, like Chabon's Gentlemen of the Road and Lawrence Wright's book about Scientology.
All the books I own I've read but some of my sisters books I Haven't read.

I've never bought a book that I never actually wanted to read.
My bookshelf mainly consists of fine literature like Friday the 13th expanded universe novels.
The only ones i haven't read are comic books.
I generally get given populist science books for birthdays/Christmas that I have no interest in. Of books I've bought myself there are a fair few I haven't been able to finish, like Catch-22 and Foucault's Pendulum.
I pretty much use a Kindle at the moment though, which makes it ludicrously easy to 'pause' reading one book and start another, and so on.
I'm a survivor. We're a dying breed.
It is today. That is not a problem.
I have a bunch like that. But I DO have plans to read them at some point in the future though.

I'm very slowly but surely getting through Relativity: The Special and General Theory. At some point my uncle gave me a shitload of Hardy Boys books from the 70s that I've never touched. Lastly, I have all of Kurt Vonnegut's books, but I've only ever read Cat's Cradle.
on that note, reading Hocus Pocus seems like a good idea i'm going to go do that
