How to mask?

I've been struggling to mask a weapon being stabbed for 2 frickin months now. I've seen many tutorials but they do not explain full steps and such. Can anyone explain it to me or send a video or game tutorial thing?

ya i know right, i figured it out, ok so what you gotta do...

Steps:
1. Make a layer of a knife/sword (E.T.C) and above it another layer, leave it empty
2. Now click on the empty layer and, Right Click+Mask ( so basically right click on the empty layer and hit mask)
3. The layers are automatically locked, unlock them... on the empty layer draw (with color not lines)
the place you wanna see. so basically what that means is don't draw the part you don't wanna see, as in the Screenshot/Picture, the grey is what i will see.
4. Lock both the layers to see what you got. :) ;)
