no because there's this weird thing in the English language where words can have multiple/different meanings depending on context and/or subject

That and people invent words because they have no logical arguement or response to something....
you nincompoop
The term Homoresentment would make more sense, it's not so much a (illogical) fear as it is hating them for feeling they shouldn't exist.
I'd be afraid of homosexuals, what if they wanted to interact with me? What if they started talking to me on a daily basis?
I certainly wouldn't be comfortable talking to people who admittedly love dick while I sit at home comfortable with having nothing to please. It's better than taking it at least 5-8 inches in the pooper.

the word "homophobia" itself means:
unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.
The word "or" in this definition indicates that "homophobia" has a different meaning depending on context
your homophobia is evident when you make a thread bitching about the word for having more than one meaning, but you haven't (as far as I am aware) made a thread for any of the other thousands of english words that have multiple meanings

so are you accepting that the "homophobia" has multiple meanings or are you still claiming that people are accusing you of being scared?
We all know homophobia is promoted to sell Qurans, Sharia Law, Holy Bibles, Fox News, and probably Joe Paggs' weekend talk show.
Satsui No Hado
There's a rich history to the word since. It was first publicly coined in the 60s by psychologist George Weinberg, published by Screw Magazine, and popularized in Weinberg's 1972 book, "Society and the Healthy Homosexual".
Since he was publishing to help the "Homophile movement" I'd assume that his motives in choosing that word were less driven by a claim that anything which goes against homosexuality is an irrational fear of homosexuality, and more that -philia and -phobia are antonyms.
I wonder why -philia fell out of use.
Although I can suspect...
Or, how about it just doesn't matter what gender a person prefers to bone provided you're not the bonee? Yes I just invented a word there.
Who cares what you get off to, as long as you aren't hurting anyone? One of the only times it makes sense to be bothered by someone being gay or not would be if you had a crush on them and their being gay ruined that (or vica-versa) but how is that their problem? It'd be your problem.
yurgenburgen, and Vnzi pretty much summed this shit up already. If you seriously believe the shit you are saying, you are incredibly fucking deluded, OP.

Post of the week right here.
Are we seriously having an in-depth topic about the meaning of a word?
Oh well, at least it's in-depth and people are actually thinking about their responses...
wait a sec...
The more I look into it, the more I realize that the OP has a poor understanding of the English language for not realizing that the word "homophobia" has different meanings. Unsurprisingly, this isn't the first time that the OP has shown a lack of knowledge on his part, so I'll simply dismiss this as misinformation.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

-philias are still used to described things such as paraphilias in the sexual sense.
But as far as the term homophobia goes:
The suffix phobia does directly define as the irrational fear of something, but something to note is that just because one may not physically be afraid of homosexuals; mentally, one may fear the idea of homosexuality.
So homophobia isn't saying you're scared of gay people, it's saying that that person despises the idea that homosexuality represents.
English is whack, yo.

Look here. I just checked in my dear old Anatole Bailly ancient greek dictionnary.
Phobein and phobos' first meaning is "to make someone run away". Yes, it means to scare away. But it is obviously not the phobia we're talking about here, the word phobia you refer to is used in psychology works both for something that is seen as repulsive and something that is seen as scary. It is used as the opposite of philia, which is supposed to indicate attraction. Though this use of "phobein" as "being repulsed by" already existed in classical ancient greek litterature, it was obviously adapted much later and applied to a completely different field, the field of science. Photophobia doesn't mean you're scared of light, obviously. It means you physically can't stand it.
Now would you please stop waving a very very thin layer of "knowledge" in etymology to support your views and leave ancient greek alone because it wants nothing to do with your "oh LGBT people are so silly" views. Thank you kindly.

It seems like you're (quite pointlessly) opening a discussion about the etymology of a word because you have no genuine or logical argument against homosexuality.
idk kel, your anger seems to come from your insecurities, which btw do come from fear

I'm pretty sure everyone knows homophobia doesn't actually mean fear of homosexuals.
Maybe OP just wanted to point out that he/she hates homosexual people, because it sure looks like it.
What a crappy thread.
Nah, it's a pretty accurate term. Virtually without exception prejudice in this day and age stems from irrational fear of the targeted group. Racists are afraid of the racial and ethnic groups they hate, sexists are afraid of women, homophobes are afraid of gay people.
Nobody's going to legitimize your stupid, hateful opinions by pretending they come from anything more than a pathetic, pants-wetting fear of things changing or people being different from you.

This guy knows what's up
Look
I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. I looked up books on paranoia, general anxiety disorders, phobias, stress, but I never, ever saw homophobia in the self help books I saw.
My theory? Alliteration. Ho-mo-pho-bia is a word that has zing to it because of the three 0-sounds. It's a word that the media uses to sell papers and ad space, like "Drunk Driving" or "Road Rage" or "Whacko Jacko" back when Michael Jackson was alive.
Don't bother arguing about the word and its origin, you may as well go and argue the words Vegetarian and Vegan and whine about how they shouldn't use those words. Only people like you care about it, those that are apparently insulted by the word because you think it means something special to you compared to how it is used to everyone else.
Or in other words, you are one of the percentage who is actually scared of them, and who doesn't like to have it pointed out.
