The lines you are making to represent a different tonal value unfortunately reinforces a sense of flatness due to how each line touches the end of one boundary straight to the next.
You either need to do a straight fill, or use proper hatching and cross-hatching to represent the surface and depth of whatever you're drawing.
Nearly everyone who is a regular in this Art Forum has spent a great amount of time giving you golden advice on how to improve.
