Why do you think that nerd or geek culture is so popular nowadays? Why hipsters and preppies try to look like nerds, geeks, gamers, otakus, etc.?
I have some theories: one is the laboral future and the amount knowledge that entails being part of that culture. Other is the way of showing to the society how different you are, by using conformist or bizarre clothes, being obssessed with "weird", "lame" or "useless" things and being anti-social.

People who try this are most of the time 12-13. They don't really know the real definition of nerd, geek, otaku, etc (which all isn't really positive, at all. Especially otaku, which basically refers to a NEET). In my opinion, 'gamer' shouldn't be something at all. Everyone plays some games in a while, playing an FPS doesn't make you any different than playing a boardgame, or w/e. No need to yell out loud "HHUEHURR IM A GAMOR xddddd".

Basically, I think most people using these words trying to become that don't know the real definition of the word itself. If you do know the definition, and are still referring to yourself as 'an otaku', or 'gamer', you should really take a second to think about what you're actually saying.

Considering you're just talking nonsense.

Alot of the people you would describe as looking like hipsters do not look like hipsters or nerds. They look like idiots and they are idiots. They are not hipsters nor do they look like one. They wear thick glasses because they saw their friend wearing one. They are just scum. These are the stupid, chavvy people with the ugly short, back and sides haircuts with too much hair gel on.These are morons trying to be trendy. None of these people reject mainstream society, theyembrace it.

One of the nice things about being an adult is that you can just like the shit you like and not worry about what arbitrary social label it puts on you.

I don't think there's any good reason to automatically assume that a person isn't being genuine about their cultural interests. You'll find out within five minutes of talking to them anyway.

Just ask them something a person from the subgroup would actually know and see what they say. Good way to weed out posers.

Ironically, often those most concerned with "posers" and outing people as posers are insecure posers themselves who figure if they're always on the offensive no one will question them.
