I hate hearing about shit like this. For those that don't know, blue heelers are AWESOME dogs. They wouldn't hurt anybody. Even it they would, a gunshot is not an ok reaction. Image if this piece of shit had shot a person "charging" at him.

And by Person I mean Human. Dogs are people too.

I have heard far too many stories like these lately, it's quite depressing. The only positive one I've heard lately, is about the cop who tried to shoot a non-violent dog, but accidentally shot himself in the foot; it's just priceless. Did you hear about that one?
Another (non-Newgrounds) forum thread about it: clickety-click.
It seems like police are hired on the basis of having bad judgement and not being able to keep calm and collected. I know that some manage to get hired despite being level headed, but by god, they're trying their darndest!
He was showing up to HELP a recently victimized family. All he had to do was wait in his car and use his public address system to call for the property owner if he was worried about the dog. Instead he probably came with a bad attitude and thought if the dog comes at him, he'll just blow it away.

In my experience heelers can be problematic if they don't have the right owner.
Their nature leads them to be quiet nippers which is why they're awesome farm/herd dogs.
dogs don't get enough respect, they contribute more to society than assholes like this.

I've never been bitten by one. In fact, they will run right up to a total stranger and lick your feet because they are so friendly. Which is probably what this poor dog was going to do.

Not all cops are idiots. But the job definitely doesn't attract the sharpest and most upstanding sorts. America sees hundreds of these stories every week.

Just an 02er.
It's just awful. The poor guy was robbed, they took his guns, his wife's jewelry, iPad, etc. They lost so much, then a cop shows up and takes the most important thing away from them, their dog.
How did he shoot the dog in the back of the head when she was 'charging' at him? I could only imagine that he could have grabbed the dog, and put his gun to the back of her head.
And who would call for backup and then taunt a man who just had to put their dog out of their misery?
Even if we assume that this was all a mistake, and that the other officers didn't know what happened, it raises the question of why an officer of the law would be so quick to fire. Surely he was taught some other tactic which could have been used to deal with a potential threat.

This. Having a weapon is no reason to see everything as a personal attack or offense.
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.
I'm not too fond of dogs but this is just sick.
Im just going to say it, most of the time dogs don't fucking attack, theres no reason for cops to be this damn pre-cautious.

Many get the job purely for the lust for power. And this is especially true for small town/rural cops such as this guy. No need to handle real crime when you can just harass honest citizens like a common bully.

Exactly what I was thinking. Scumbag had to have grabbed the dog or something to shoot it in the back of the head.
I hope someone finds this cunt, and shatters his kneecaps.

Magic.
I understand that it's easy to want to rush to judgment, but all I can say is that this story is unfortunate all around. The farmer was burglarized (who knows how much he lost), his dog was shot and he had to manually kill her to alleviate her suffering, and the cop responsible for shooting that dog is now jobless and dealing with a lot of people pissed off at him on a global scale. It's important to look at something like this from multiple perspectives. All of the unshakeable bloodthirsty dog lovers out there want this guy shot dead in a similar fashion, or at least locked up. Most likely not gonna happen. But you have to understand: he's a cop. Cops have to make a lot of very tough split second decisions that involve life and death. No matter who you are, where you are and even if you are an animal, charging at a cop like that is probably going to get you shot. Animals are more likely to get shot since they're more unpredictable.
There are also no easy solutions to situations like this either. One possible solution is to have more animal encounter training programs for all cops nationwide since training regarding vicious or potentially vicious animals varies from department to department. If everyone had a similar SOP, which can be applied in situations like this, then there'd be far fewer upset people. I wouldn't think about pepper spraying dogs that I think were a threat to me. Tasing wouldn't be ruled out though. But in NYC, tasing isn't even an option unless you're either 1) a sergeant or higher or 2) in the ESU (Emergency Services Unit--basically our SWAT team).
This also reminds me of another cop shooting dog in the head incident right here in NYC locally on 14th Street almost 2 years ago. That case involved a guy who suffered a tonic-clonic seizure and went unconscious. Some bystander called 911. He had a pit bull named Star with him. The cops came to the scene before the paramedics, but the pit bull was so defensive of her owner that she wouldn't anyone near him, lest they want to get bitten. Obviously, when the owner is in need of medical attention, that's a problem. As the video clearly shows, the cop was just standing still, yelling at the dog to "Get out of the way." What happens next is obvious: the dog charges at him and he has no choice but to shoot her in the head, causing bystanders to squeal, scream and yell and of course, the dog screaming and twitching in agony. It was subsequently maced later. The shooting cop? Still on the job.
By the way, that dog/Star ultimately survived her head shot wound. I'm not sure if Candy would have lived--ultimately it was actually the owner that decided to kill her after she was shot. We can spend all day finger pointing, but that still doesn't change the fact that the whole incident just sucks from just about everyone's perspective.

well he's been fired and now jobless, now any asshole can go up to him on the street and kick this dick in the balls. and people wonder why I think local law enforcement are a waste of my tax money.
After watching the dashcam video you can see the dog was in the bed of the truck for some time. That cowardly officer had plenty of time to retreat back to his car if he was uncomfortable. He had no business approaching the dog if he felt he might have to shoot it. What a scum bag.

I've heard about this stuff before, I think it was New York and this cop shot a dog called Max. For barking.
The dog's owner collapsed in a heap over Candy as she was whimpering and trying to stay alive. Middleton said she would never have survived.
"The bullet went in the back of her head and came out near her eye," he said.
She was suffering. So, to put her out of her misery, Middleton held her head in a bucket of water.
This is really a saddening thought.
