Would someone please tell me how to stave off back pain? It's been a recurring thing for one or two years now, but I've only been told it's a pulled muscle when I went to the doctor.

At about the middle of my back, if you trace the bottom of the left side of your rip cage around to your spine, my back pinches. If I really have to move quickly or lift something heavy, I have to hold my breath so it doesn't pinch more. I'm currently leaning over in my chair because I can't sit or stand straight, and it just fucking hurts.

Find something extremely heavy, turn your back to it, grip it with your back still turned to it, and with all your strength, use your spine in a jerking, twisting motion to try and lift the object. Results may vary.

If it's a pulled muscle there's not a whole lot you can do. Depending on what's going on, using heat might make the issue better OR worse. There are three main 'erector' muscles in the back; it's possible that, for some reason, your body is not delegating the work evenly between them, which might account for some of the pain.

Could you post a side-view picture of yourself? It's possible your spinal curve is causing part of the problem.

Also a reminder:

Never take advice from Xenomit. You'll just end up straining the wrong muscles doing what he said to do.

Stretches that involve slow twists of the spine, like your left shoulder curving over to your left hip about halfway, and same for the other side.

Take one hand, and extend that arm straight up. Bend that arm at the elbow, so that hand is over your opposite shoulder. Take the other hand, grab the raised arm's wrist, and gently pullllll it down, go with it. The top of your head now at your inner elbow. Your neck and your spine curving in the direction that the wrist is being pulled down.

tl:dr, do moar stretches. Make sure you ain't sleeping weird, sitting weird, or walking with a slouch...be more consciencous in what you have established as the neutral rest position of your spine.

Worst comes to worse, see a chiropractor.

Having heat on your back or using muscle rub and trying to sit straight should help a bit if you try to do so for at least 10-15 minutes a day.

Wow, I have that exact same thing. (probably) I believe my problem is a weak back, due to a sedentary lifestyle. It's intermittent, not a constant thing. I tried doing some back exercises, but that made my back a lot more sore for a week.

You could see a masseuse or chiropractor, or do a bodyweight version of the good-morning exercise, among other things.
Also, make sure your chair is a proper chair with lower back support.

I thought it was a slipped disk at first because it's close to my spine, and the intensity was pretty bad at times, but probably not. I didn't exercise today, and it came about about 2 hours ago when I was still sitting here on the computer. I'll try the heat, though.

It was funny to read though.

I've considered seeing a chiropractor, but my dad had a bad experience once in which whatever was ailing him was worsened. I know it doesn't usually turn out like that, most likely the practitioner was bad, but he'll still try to convince me out of it.

Most definitely that particular practitioner, I agree. Still, that should be a last resort (before it worsens) anyway due to the high cost of an appointment.

In the meantime, stay away from enflammatory foods that are high in sodium, hydrate yourself well, stretch and even limber up your spine with some cardio (try not to emphasize weighted exercises).

Again, mind your posture, and good luck. Hope that its just a temporary pinched nerve that'll subside with time and patience. Sometimes that kinda stuff is triggered by a big weather change.

I had soup today and put salt in it. :B I have to manage what I eat and stay active, because my mom has a hereditary disease that affects your hips, so I'm likely to get it.

Thanks, man. The weather's been normal, but it only appears once in a while, so I have no idea what triggers it.

I'll see if I can have someone massage my back tomorrow, thanks.

It's probably not a herniation; as I recall, 98% of all disc herniations happen between L4-L5 or L5-S1, and among the other 2%, the vast majority of those are still in the lumbar or cervical regions. Since you mentioned the pain is around your ribs, I'm guessing what you're experiencing is local to the thoracic area.

If I asked you to point to the pain, how would you do it? Is it something you can point to with one fingertip, or is the affected area more broad?

If it weren't for your percents being a little different, I'd be very tempted to call you on your "as I recall".

Why not?

I'm finishing copying notes from a class. My handwriting sucks when I'm forced to abbreviate and exchange words for symbols when trying to get down important information.

Newgrounds is a good place to fry your brain the way I see it.

You're probably right on that one. But it's a site I frequent and I enjoy reading some people's posts, no one said you can't have multiple tabs open.

That's pretty close to your left kidney. If your pee is usually a dark yellow then you should ask a doctor about it.

If you are lucky it might pop back in place.

Get off the computer and go lie down or relax somewhere. Marathon a TV show.
