"Bro" never bothered me, but I could see the one guy's point about a stranger calling you bro and asking you for a favor.
"Dude" is also usually ok, as long as it is by someone in your age group or somebody older with long hair.
I think from now on I'm just gonna' start calling people "friendly fella," like Harland Williams does. That would be a real treat.
