I liked the graphic style. I suppose the people who hated Wind Waker also hated Twilight Princess.

I'm guessing it was too light-hearted & cartoonish in contrast to the more serious nature of its N64 predecessors? The vocal majority hasn't bagged on WW's graphics since Twilight Princess came out. I will say, however, that the HD remake ruined the art style imo.

Because back when Nintendo announced a new LoZ title for the gamecube, they showed something similar to Ocarina of Time, and people were butthurt that it didn't look like that.

I remember disliking them too at the time. As someone already said, I think it was mainly because of the switch towards a cartoon-ish / kiddy style of graphics when everybody was expecting upgraded OoT/MM graphics.
Windwaker felt a lot more kid-friendly in general in comparison to the N64 titles, and perhaps that ticked off many fans of OoT/MM who were hitting puberty by the time Windwaker came out (like I was).
By yeah, it's become apparent that cel-shaded graphics actually age quite well and now many people seem to have fallen in love with that style.
Looks like someone poo'd and slapped it into a video game.

The vocal minority. Most poeple consider Windwakers graphics to be timeless, and they've aged incredibly well.

I agree with you. The only problem with WW was too much sailing, at least at the start of the game.
