Good luck seeing anything in that helmet.
I don't know the name of any gladiator classes. But anything with a good shield and sword/spear that doesn't have a helmet that severely limits your eyesight is fine by me.

Actually, gladiators had quite an easy time seeing through the grill of the helmet. The helmet is based off the Boeotian helmet, simply with an ornate protective face grill. Impalement through the face was somewhat popular in gladiator matches, and so higher ranking gladiators had the rights to these kinds of helmets. Other kinds of gladiators who had the same helmets were thaex, and the hoplomachus. As a matter of fact, the thraex and the hoplomachus were almost identical to the murmillo, the only difference being main hand and off hand equipment.
The main advantages to the murmillo are the tower shield, and the roman shortsword that allowed them to royally fuck up anyone who got close. Sharing similarities to the thraex and hoplomachus, they were usually paired with them, and occasionally were matched up with more agile gladiator classes like the retiarius.
I don't know the name of any gladiator classes. But anything with a good shield and sword/spear that doesn't have a helmet that severely limits your eyesight is fine by me.
In that case you'd probably wanna be a andabatae

Stone Cold Steve Austin. Back in wrestlemania 27 (I think it was) ther was loads of clips with the wrestlers acting out famous scenes from films. One of which was Stone Cold Steve Austin as Maximus Decimus Meridius.

To be fair, that armour is pretty much as practical as it gets if you want speed and protection. His entire left side (the one with the shield, i.e. the one that's going to be facing the opponent) is completely armoured with plate. Everything that will be behind the shield is bare, allowing for great ease of movement. His sword arm is also covered, allowing safety while striking.

More on-topic, I've always really liked the idea of using a spiked cestus, so being a Cestus would be interesting. Combat with a two-handed sword also has a few bits to it that I like, so I suppose Thraex would be pretty up there too.

What about having a spiked cestus on one hand and in the other a whip and a short sword for if you drop the whip.

I'd probably drop the whip for a net since whips aren't good for much other than inflicting pain (which gladiators are trained not to respond to), but that could be pretty devastating.

Hmm...the net WOULD be pretty useful for incapacitating your enemy long enough to get a kill blow in.
