Well celebi is good enough for me.
I'm guessing the staff is playing a prank. If not someone has figured out how to session swap with other users. If you session swap you can gain access to an account without a password. since we don't need a password to change our forums icons that is how someone could be pulling this off.

There was already a thread up (you are posting in it).

This is what I think about the profile picture changes. I am not asserting any one theory above all others, and I am not specifying one sole person for the events.
Logically, there's no way the database could be changed so quickly without record or log of page access for each user account. In the case that there are logs, they should be examined and the first person who accessed each account would most likely be the one who is causing this. However, it seems that many of the accounts who have hand their profile picture changed, mine included, were online. Thus, this seems less plausible as an explanation.
The notion that one person could be doing such would be dispelled, and also that it was an "inside job" from the mods because it would only create more work for them to look after. I do not believe the threads would have been carefully deleted in this case, and this now also seems less logical.
When I once attempted to post in the BBS, within a thread that is now deleted, I received a typical error message for double-posting, apart from one thing. The text read: "It looks like you are trying to double-post: /bbs/topic/1364160 (Thank you hackers)." The text in the parenthesis matches the title of a thread that was deleted during the height of this event, and is odd considering the possibility of a bug in the system. I would include a screenshot, but my computer cannot load it at the moment. When I can, I will.
A coding bug is all that seems plausible, yet it too can be easily disproved because of the double-posting error. While other people could certainly be changing their user icons, it is possible that a bug in the uploader could be responsible for changing the icons of separate accounts, whether online and not. A list should be compiled of all users who recently changed their profile pictures and compare which account was the first to change where others in the BBS, and possibly around the site, also, changed to reflect it. I am not sure how this happened or where the bug lies, but for now it seems the most logical explanation regarding the circumstances, though it still is not concrete.

The changes are happening slow enough for it to be the work of one person. If it's happening only to people who are online. It adds plausibility to my idea that someone has figured out how to session swap.

I just changed my icon to the Abstergo logo. As I said before, if that is the case and my reasoning is correct, there should be some log of such, and I suggest the mods examine them. At the time I am typing this, there seems to be only 23 users online in the General forums. At least three of us online currently had our profile pictures changed, and the number of accounts online had decreased from then. If the icons are only able to be changed when the user is logged in, then it would make sense that the number of icons still being changed holds a positive correlation.
Please explain how someone would session swap, just to clarify. I'm not extremely versed in computers.

Session swapping is when a person switches cookie data with another user and gains access to their account without need for a password. It's been at least 6 years since i found out about so I'm not so well versed either. From what i remember is that they insert code into the site that grabs the data. Once they have that it's incredibly easy to gain access to accounts. They just change their own session cookie into yours.
I think it's a session swapper because things that don't require passwords are being changed.

I messaged a moderator earlier and they said it was due to the bug I mentioned earlier. Why would a moderator confirm a bug if it is someone else session swapping? Assuming the mod was in on it, I was also banned earlier for the 'hacker' thread I created. Yet, I don't think it had anything to do with the moderators. It doesn't feel right.
In Decimating's other thread, crebzaki said themselves and iCarly are behind this, but there's nothing to back that up at all. It is too easy to take responsibility to say it is true, and after all, I do not think any of us will really see how this is happening.

My monkey's on several things:
1. A banana tree
2. Session swapping
3. The perpetrator is Ma1achi
4. He can only mess with people who are online and communicating with the server
Meaning the more you try to post, the longer you stay active on NG, the more likely it is you will be targeted. He wouldn't have access to anything important. Unless you're autistic and think having your user icon messed with is a "fate worse than death" (–Decimating).

It could be both i guess...... Mods are not always experts. Authority doesn't always equal competence. They probably don't know.

That's why I'm trying to limit the suspicions around what's really happening, even if I'm not 100% certain myself. At this point, the likeliness that it is from crebzaki and iCarly has increased, but there's still no way to be sure. The same goes with the bug error, however that has more of my confidence because of the moderator's explanation.
Profanity, why do you say that Ma1achi is the one responsible? Granted, it seems that people offline are less likely to have their profile pictures changed (I have no way of verifying that, but it did narrow to a few people even with others online) suggests a person rather than a bug. Unless a way surfaces to show a definite link between this and a user account, unfortunately it cannot be solved until TomFulp or another moderator figures it out.

I have stated before that I am not making accusations, and I repeat that now. There is no way to rule it out, as the source has not been located and therefore it is a possibility, however unlikely. And, I think it is fairly unlikely.

That's not 'why', that's you describing the discussion. I dont care about that.
What happened that lead anyone to think this was anything other than user icons being changed by someone exploiting a vety confined and harmless vulnerability?

'Why' is still because it was mentioned and became an unconfirmed possibility. It is not impossible that a mod could be doing such, there's no way to confirm nor deny it. However, given that more people now are recognizing a pattern to what's going on and attributing it to another user (who seems to have been banned countless times before) and that a mod said a bug was the problem, it's further narrowed down.

I'm a bit worried about a potential 'session cookie swapping' breach myself. Tom's got thing this weekend, and is likely in a hotel, using their wifi.... someone sniffing packets? I don't think admin is compromised, but Tom's account.... no, this looks beyond weird. If a select bunch of BBSers are affected as well, then something that hasn't been mentioned yet, is afoot!

This is maxing out my post limit.
When I messaged a mod appealing my earlier ban and informing them about what was happening, they said, and I quote, " there is a bug with the uploader atm that allows access to change other people's pics."
There was no specific instance that led to suspicion of a moderator as a suspect. For the reason that it could not be confirmed/denied and that people were starting to throw around ideas, I included it.
