At lunch today, a friend of mine was sitting next to me with her phone out. She was bored, doing some homework. So I decided to play around with her and jokingly try to guess the combination to get into her phone. So after the third try, the phone locked out (it unlocks after a minute or so and you can try again).
So she snatched it from me and started to cry and called me an asshole. She wasn't acting strange before, and she never acts like that, I don't know what happened.
My friend said she's on her period, but I don't know anything about that stuff. I'm a sophomore and I've never received any sex education or anything, can someone please fill me in on all this stuff? I'm really confused and kind of scared.

Do that often and you'll just be acting like an asshole, but if it's not often then she might have overreacted with the period claim. It's just a phone lock, remember.

Her hormones are wild around this time, even with no sex ed, you have to know that, don't you have biology? I learned this stuff when i was in the 7th or 8th grade.
Just beware that a lot of women use that excuse for stuff.

But basically each girl has different reactions, some feel pain because of the cramps and they get moody, some don't feel pain at all and act normal.

She may not have realized how quickly the phone unlocks and thought you'd made it so she couldn't use it. People can get really touchy about their phones nowadays. Or she could have just been in a bad mood for any number of reasons, which is something that happens to everyone and isn't exclusively caused by periods, for fuck's sake.
Or maybe she just don't like people playin' on her phone.

Who gets THAT upset about it though if that's really why she started crying? Also, just because people like messing with their friends once in a while doesn't make them immature. Everybody does it, it's a fact of life, man.

Girls can't handle themselves when dumb shit happens to them. Not all girls, of course, but some. Just try not to do it again and don't feel like an asshole. Her reaction was her choice, not yours. You're not responsible for her actions. I went through my entire life thinking the way people reacted to things I did was my fault. Let me tell you, when you realize that somebody's actions are not your fault, life becomes so much better.

Let's see, if you mess with someone's phone, and cause it to be locked because you were messing around with it, she has every right to be pissed. I would think that it would be pretty obvious considering that people would be upset if someone was trying to skulk around their personal belongings.
