What would be the best free or cheap program for animation?
And is it easy to do?

Synfig, though if you count free trial Adobe flash CS6.
And is it easy to do?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll put it into consideration.
Animation isn't easy to do. A minute take 1440 frames. That is 1440 different drawings. In order to make a 30 minute animation that would take 43200 frames. Mind you can double up frames or extend exposure so it doesn't have to be 43200 individual frames. Longer projects will take a long time. Keep that in mind. I have a 'friend' who has been working on a solo animation that is roughly 10-15 minutes long. It looks great, but they are only halfway through and estimated that they wont be finished till 2015. She's already been working on it for a year (also a full time college student).
For my first test animation that was 4 second long it took me a little over a week. I use toonboom studio, which you can get a 30 free trial, but not only does all the exports have a giant watermark there is a steep learning curve. Most people don't do animation for free. It takes time and usually an animation team to lesson the workload. Personally, it's the best I've tried. The first few days before actually trying to animate I just played with the tools to see what they do.

As for Free animation programs I've heard about Vectorian giotto . I found it too rough to use. You can't adjust the stabilizer which is set too high so no matter what you draw it doesn't come out how you drew it. I suppose if it's for a youtube intro it might* be useful?
There is also Pencil, I've tried it, but wasn't fond of it.
I tested these programs a few years ago so they might have better versions now.
(But still don't expect high quality from free animation programs.)
You have to start somewhere. This is just the information I've gathered so far. Anyone can correct me.
you realize that you're question is the same as asking, "just incase I can't find a musician, what's a cheap and easy piano to use?"
even the free software is going to have a bit of a learning curve if you don't have animation experience.
