Stencyl Jam 2014 Winners 2014-04-01 23:39:18 Reply

I gotta hop on a plane in the morning but I didn't want to leave without wrapping up Stencyl Jam 2014, which has been HARD because there are so many great and deserving entries this year! I enlisted AdventureIslands to help out since he's a Stencyl Master and didn't make a game this time around.

1st Place - $500 + Stencyl Studio License

Spiderling is downright beautiful, with a slick web mechanic that takes some practic but it's worth it to see all this game has to offer.

2nd Place - $300 + Stencyl Studio License

Koan has a great zen vibe and fresh mechanics. Felt like a different sort of platforming experience overall.

3rd Place - $200 + Stencyl Studio License

In this gravity platformer, you don't jump but you can change gravity between four directions at any time. I've played a number of gravity-themed games but this one felt different from the rest. I really enjoyed the level design, the art, and little touches of game feel as I moved about. Can be frustrating as hell but people who like a challenge will love this, especially trying to get all three stars in each stage.

4th Place - $100

D-Pression has an effective visual and aural presentation. The darkness truly feels like a malevolent force that must be avoided, and the level design makes it all the more sinister. The music also works really well, with a seamless segue whenever you fail.

Congrats to the winners!

If any of you guys have a Studio License already and want to pass it along, you can PM me with the user you'd like to gift it to, or let me know if I should try and pick someone from the jam myself.

Some personal notes from the jam:

It was awesome to see Dylan go from animator to straight up game developer when he grabbed Stencyl and made ALZ for the jam.

He then followed it with Pine, a really ambitious game inspired by Endeavor, both worth playing.

It was cool to see Wiesi of Miami Shark fame pick up Stencyl, fall in love and immediately find his groove:

I also want to give a shout out to the Famous Paintings Parodies games by Munguia. While they didn't end up winning, they were big crowd favorites and the vast amount of parody art he has created is beyond compare. These games are a great way to brush up on your art knowledge, too.

You're not kidding.

Holy shit so many of these are fucking fine. To be honest I wrote off Stencyl as another "makegamezquick" piece of shit software that is to browser games what GoAnimate is to flash movies.

But if this is the quality of output it has, I figure I best start paying attention.

Props to Yakuza Rising for having me burn through like 3 hours before I figured that I wasn't even logged in.

Whoa dude, you lost your secure certification (or let it lapse)! I used to log on to the https FP, to avoid seeing any ads at all before logging in. And that roll over ad at the top, is really lame to mouse around, or so I've been told :P

Whoah!
Thanks a million for choosing my game as the fourth place winner :'D! Seeing how many awesome games there were this year, I had already given up all the hopes of getting a spot among the top, and I want to thank all people who played the game made by a small guy like me.

I want to congratulate all the other winners, as well as thank all the other participants for so many awesome games this year. It has been a blast to play them all, although I still have many left to play.

I also want to thank both Tom and AdventureIslands for being the judges in this competition, as I can only imagine how though it must have been to choose the winners when there were so, so many good games to choose from.

Hope everyone is happy with the results! :3

Nice, gratulations to the winners.

Spiderling was also one of my favorites. Never saw the fluid web mechanics in other stencyl games like this.

Great job to everyone else who participated. I think that the quality of this jam was beyond the expectations and I guess the next jams will be even more challenging :D

Time to play!

Yeah, Stencyl is actually pretty sweet and it's built on a really solid tech stack too! Haxe & OpenFl are really nice, Stencyl just takes away some of the pain of actually having to hand write the code.

Game Maker style software in general is very usable these days.

11:45pm EST, there was no verifiable https certification (via FF 28.0/Verizon FIOS)... I think cloudflare went a little wonky. An hour or so later, it went back to normal, just as it is now. I did notice sales were still going on, so maybe it was just me.
