Looking back, I don't know how I was able to sit and watch DBZ every weekday.
Five episodes go by at a time before something important happens.

I know that feel. I was thinking just that the entire time I was watching all of the K-On! series.

I've read the manga, but I haven't watched that much of the anime.
For me, I just hate the pacing. It's worse than One Piece - it takes like half a season for anything to happen and that was while watching the abridged Kai version. >~<
There are A LOT of better anime out there. Many otakus believe DBZ to be one of those "beginner" anime, similarly to Pokemon, Digimon or YuGiOh - it acted as a gateway anime when you were young, but they're not considered top quality. While I completely respect Akira Toriyama and his talent, I still believe his success was also somewhat a stroke of luck to gain renowned popularity through DB and DBZ. I personally prefer his previous work, Dr. Slump, for some reason...
My rule of thumb: if it's a weekly anime that takes only one week to produce an episode rather than a full year to produce 13 or 26 episodes, the quality-to-quantity balance shifted somewhere....
I lost the game.
