Phew, barely managed to fit the title, but yea how long time do you usually spend on one track?
For me I usually use about about 8 hours though I've over 34 hours on the one I'm working on now.

So what about you?

I've spent anywhere from 30 min to like... 5 years on a single track.

On average, lately... I'd say about 5-7 hours.

I normally spend between 1-4 hours if I am in the zone....

When I create Piano pieces, I can take up to months...

When I write scores in notation, I make sure I am careful and not rush it, so far been working on a piece for about 4 days yet I only have 20 seconds of music, I don't want to ruin the rest of it! xD

I have composed 1 song which took me a year (to get it right) and that was for my partner... Hahaha.....

and lately, I have been working longer on pieces which can take from a day to a week :(

I try to spend no more than a month on a single song. If you leave it any longer, it will begin to lose its energy. You have to capture the emotion of the piece before it fades away. I also wouldn't spend less than a week on a song though.

It really depends. "Whopper" only took a couple of weeks to make, while "Histortion" and "Blood, Steam, and Punk" have been in the works for years at a time. Super jealous of all these high-speed geniuses here who can put something amazing together and publish it within a few days!

For me, from 1 to 10 hours most of the time.

However, seeing how long Madeon's projects take, I think I should work a little more myself.

When I use 24 hours on a song it usually means I've been working on it for a week so depends how much you work on it pr. day

My working times generally range between 10-20 hours. At one point I get inspiration and finish the entire track within 5 hours, then spend the next 5-15 fixing (usually a lot of) mistakes, mixing and mastering.

I typically spend more time actually designing my sounds carefully than actually sequencing and then again it's juggling between many projects at one time.

I'd say my 'Typical' timeframe for a track when I'm working on one will be around 6-30 Hours tops. For tracks I put maximum effort into, up that to 50 hours tops unless I'm in a really inspired & energetic mood.

start to finish in FL, usually no more than 3 hours. any more than 7 hours means i'm probably splitting hairs over dumb stuff that doesn't matter and i just force myself not to work on whatever it is anymore. but then i don't waste time naming or recolouring anything, and i've learned how to be really efficient with my workflow in FL.

chip stuff is a bit different cause i'm real slow with tracking, then i have to mix it after that. probably 12-16 hours for a decent length track.

recording and mixing vocals adds at least another 2 hours onto anything, too.

this is all before i master anything though. but i don't really master stuff unless it goes on a release or it's for some other professional project

p.s. i am gay

I can create tracks for fun in 1 hour, but it's more like 30-40 hours on average, spread on several weeks/months^^
I usually get the main idea/hook in a couple of hours, then the tweaking starts (aka problems start).

I create music for the fun of it, not for a living, so having no real deadline/objective can be problematic^^
Often i have a "good idea" just when i think my track was completed ahah!
I guess i'm not the only one in that situation.

Creating details take the most time, also i spend alot of time on the mixing part, to make sure the amateur-mastering stage gets easier.
Once i "commit" to mastering, i consider that the track is completed.

it really depends on what i want to do with the track. if i want to try something new, i'll do some research on it and try to apply that research to the new music. which can take anywhere from 1 hour to an entire day. i'm very patient when it comes to music. in fact, i've been working on my latest track for at least a week now. but i also "master" my own music so i spend countless hours trying out different mastering techniques and using different types of speakers and headphones to get the sound i want. i'm very very very very picky about my sounds.

but usually it takes me about a 8-12 hours to make a track on a normal day.

I'm assuming the people here saying they've worked years on a song doesn't mean that they worked on it constantly for that span of time. That would be ridiculous.

I probably don't spend enough time on a song, but probably somewhere in between 3-5 hours for the ones I have out now.

For me it takes between 5 and 10 hours to create a track, then probably another 10 hours of trying to mix it, before it becomes apparent that none of it fits together, and I've just spent 20 hours on something that makes me want to cry.

It depends on the day for me. I actually wish that at least one of these DAWs today had a feature that records the amount of time you spend on a project.

Normally about 1-2 hours per minute. I also generally do a piece in one sitting. If it takes more than three sittings, I will usually scrap it as it tends to wander or become sub-par after that point. I usually will not work on a piece after a week unless I am reviving an old theme from it.

I think this question is a little irrelevant but still interesting to find out people's habits. Mozart could churn out a symphony in no time at all, almost like hearing a track in your mind and writing it all down as you hear it. Wagner and Brahms took years to complete works. The same is true today. I imagine Skream puts out material compulsively, but I'm sure there are people who take years too. At the end I really think it's not speed that's important, but what your relationship with energy is.

That being said, personally I find it advantageous to learn how to work efficiently so that you are deliberate about what you want, and can imagine quickly to produce results. Additionally, I'm going to make a plug for Ableton and say that ever since I switched from Logic, the workflow is better, easier, faster, and so much more organized.

NG.. is it really worth it?

Not sure. Maybe in 1 hour stints, maybe 24 hours, I'd guess.

Yeah, somethings take around an hour. But I've had projects that have taken over a year to complete, with only around 20 hours spent on it. Sometimes ideas just don't come easy ><

I get the bulk of most projects done in 4 or 5 hours or so. Then I spend any given amount of time fine tuning the sounds to how I want them to be, to the best of my ability.

In all honesty, music makes itself. That and i dont use trackers, i compose the complete piece in a single pianoroll.
