White Rappers

Two day ago, Billboard posted it's Top 100 list of most popular rap songs of all-time. Ryan Lewis and Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" is now the highest charting rap single of all-time.

To celebrate and prove I'm not an anti-white "racist" (as a lot of people on this site seem to think I am), I'm going to give my views and get a discussion going about white (or Jewish, whatever) rappers.

EMINEM (Sekhem's rating: 9/10 in prime, 5/10 now)

The best selling rapper of all-time. A technically proficient rapper who seems to have run out of life events to make entertaining songs about. I don't think he needs much of a description.

MACKLEMORE (Sekhem's rating: 7/10)

The rare pop-crossover rapper who can make songs about socially conscious issues such as white privilege and gay rights. The Heist is a highly entertaining album and certainly deserved the Grammy for best hip-hop album.

CAGE (Sekhem's rating: 8/10)

Unfortunately, Cage is probably best known for his beef with Eminem and not so much his excellent output throughout the early '00s. A member The Weathermen, Leak Bros, and Smut Peddlers, Cage is probably the best undeground rapper suffering from depression. Cage is an incredibly underrated lyricist, "Paint a portrait four minutes no rush while fools flock in a circle to dissect the brush," and unfortunately no longer very active.

NECRO (Sekhem's rating: as a producer 9/10, as a rapper 4/10)

Easily one of the most underrated producers in hip-hop, Necro is no-holds-barred horrorcore rapper who really only raps about sex, horror films, and drugs. While it can be cool (the Giallo-inspired track "Them" from Mr. Hyde's debut that features a prominent Goblin sample) it gets old quickly and is often more cringe-inducing than anything.

R.A. THE RUGGED MAN (Sekhem's rating: 5/10)

The only white rapper to be praised by The Notorious B.I.G. and an unfortunate victim of terrible '90s label practices. He's had a few standout verses ("Uncommon Valor") and is technically proficient, but is often unable to craft listenable songs.

YELAWOLF (Sekhem's rating: 6/10)

The only white rapper on this list to have collaborated with my favorite rapper, Gucci Mane. Yelawolf's output lacks consistency (a song with Kid Rock, really?) and none of his albums are listenable all the way through, but he can still manage to produce highly entertaining tracks occasionally.

MAC MILLER (Sekhem's rating: 6/10)

I admit that I haven't listened to all of Mac Miller's output and his high-pitched Quasimoto-like alter ego is supremely annoying, but he is able to craft complete songs unlike most rappers on this list. I particularly liked his collaboration with Jay Electronica last year.

EL-P (Sekhem's rating: as a producer 8/10, as a rapper 7/10)

I feel a little badly for rating El-P at a 7 since he did form Def Jux, Company Flow, and produced several classic albums by Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, and Cage, but he remains uninteresting to me despite his technical proficiency and usually good production.

BEASTIE BOYS (Sekhem's rating: 10/10)

I figured I had to have a 10 on this list. Here it is. Almost every album is classic, every side project is good (BS2000, Latch Brothers, etc), and they have remained relevant for longer than I've been alive.

KNO/TONEDEFF/ATMOSPHERE (Sekhem's rating: 7/10)

I'm not sure how to describe any of these rappers, but they all seem to make good introspective hip-hop tracks and have an eye for good, soulful production. CunninLynguists/Atmosphere and its collaborators tend to be worth listening to.

WHITE RAPPERS WITH A SCORE OF 4/10 OR LESS OR SIMPLY BORING TO ME (huge list incoming):

HOUSE OF PAIN, ICP AND ALL ASSOCIATED, ILL BILL, AESOP ROCK (BORING), GORETEX, COPYRIGHT (HOWEVER, USED TO OKAY), BLOCKHEAD (BORING), MR. HYDE, SABAC, BROTHER ALI, VINNIE PAZ AND RELATED, SAGE FRANCIS, LITERALLY ANY NERDCORE RAPPER (ALL 0/10), MAC LETHAL, EYEDEA, KRISTOFF KRANE, SADISTIK, DOOMTREE, BUCK 65, THE REST OF ANTICON, ASHER ROTH, ACTION BRONSON/RIFF RAFF (CAN BE COOL SOMETIMES), MACHINE GUN KELLY, ETC

Did I miss any important ones (probably a ton of European/Grime rappers)?

Do you disagree with any of my assessments? I fully understand that some rappers such as Brother Ali, Sage Francis, and Buck 65 are technically proficient and you may like them, but I find them boring.

You have to be trolling me. I know you said Aes was boring in another thread, but...really? Fucking Eyedea? Are they too heavy for you or what? And why Bill a 4/10? He's a better rapper than Necro and almost as good a producer. 7/10 beats and 7/10 lyrics at least. I personally do enjoy B. Ali and Francis, but I won't argue much about them.
