Its point is to take up an otherwise empty space and provide quicker access to: Friends, Stats, Artist news, blog replis and forum replies

You can easily identify when people reply to your posts or to your submissions etc. basically if you are looking for replies then it is very useful, it also includes hashtags of your username incase people want to alert you to look at something that would interest you.
If not interested in the above then of course you don't need to worry about it, it isn't thrown in your face or anything as you need to go into it to check the feed so can just ignore it if you like.

I think the feed is important. Everyday I meet new people, all thank to the feed.
I thought they would have removed that space and made every other one a little bit longer to fill in the empty space.

It's a quick edit with useful links. It might get added to, after more thought.
The NG redesign is coming, eventually, so you can expect bigger changes on the horizon anyway.

Honestly, though, Newgrounds would REALLY benefit if one of those icons up by your username and icon would have a notification display, kind of like the notifications icon on Facebook.
So whenever soneone replies to you in a thread or something, you don't have to go to the front page / blog replies page to know about it.
