But that's wrong, the problem with Islam isn't the Islamic fundamentalists, it's the fundamentals of Islam. To sat Islam is as peaceful as Jainism would be just an outright lie.

Islam is not a unified faith anymore. There are sects that are violent and many that are not, but in the end you can't just say the whole of Islam is one or the other. It's kind of sad, really. People are being called terrorists for peacefully living their life as Sunni Muslims

My opinion is that there are plenty of people who follow Islam and are peaceful people (have no intention of committing any terrible acts). Likewise, there are followers who spend their entire lives planning and executing terrible acts in the name of Islam. I do not believe the religion is of peace, as certain passages can be interpreted as promoting violence. If Islam was a religion of peace, than surely there could be no argument, the text would be clear and direct. Instead there is room for interpretation, which in my mind makes Islam not entirely a religion of peace, but certainly not a religion of warmongering either.

There is something very imperialistic and close-minded within monotheist religions. If you have a view that there is only one God, one good interpretation of what the world, morality, life, etc. is, I doubt that you'll have much open-mindedness to any kind of democratic and free debate on what is right and wrong. To me, this kind of discourse is pretty much the same as the American army's logic of "giving freedom" to other countries by invading them and forcing their politics and views on them.
It's all just dogmatic and imperialistic thinking, really.

This relativistic approach is wrong. If the paper says "Kill all the traitors", sure you might have some latitude in your interpretation of what "traitors" are, but the paper still says "Kill..." so no, religion is not just what you make of it.
It really depends on what your definition of religion is two. If someone decides to leave out some aspects of the religion, and follow others, than what do you call "religion" in this specific case? Is it the practice of the individual that is a religion, or is it the actual paper, book, tale, etc. that is the religion. Because like I said before, if the paper says "Kill all traitors", than no, the religion is not just some kind of neutral stuff that you can bend in whichever way you want.
