I see your point, but at the same time, I use the system pretty well I think, and it's hard to believe that it's not being used properly for the most part. Maybe you saw/made something really awful?

The problem with voting systems of any sort is that they are purely opinionated. You cannot expect the world to be fair and just when most of people's lives are run on opinion.

With that said, when you make content, especially on a site like this, you are making it to appeal to the users. At least, that's what you have to do to be successful. This isn't an artistic critique website. There will be people who fairly judge and review your work, but if that's all you are after, Newgrounds (or Youtube for that matter) is NOT the place for you.

It's not like we're discussing something terribly important, it's just another thread complaining about one of ng's features.

Eh, the ratings tend to average out though. Sure it sucks for a lesser-viewed piece but it'll average out the more views something gets. It might only really be a problem for something that doesn't have a lot of views.

The only thing I would add is that "casual" games tend to be inflated by up to a full star while difficult games tend to be penalized by up to a full star. Is it fair to downvote a game just because you happen to suck at it?

I think that is true to a certain point, but once you get up above an average of 4 stars it's hard to know just by look at the ratings what is like, a fairly-well made game with no major flaws fun for a single playthrough and, like an EPIC GROUNDBREAKING EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD type game.

A lot of people tend to give games in that first category five stars, which isn't really fair to the games in the second category that truly deserve it. I guess the point I'm making is there is nothing at all wrong with giving a game you thoroughly enjoyed 4/5 stars. A good rater should only give 5 stars to something that is as good or close to the best (flash) game they have ever played, otherwise you leave yourself no room to differentiate between what is good and what is excellent.

Mmm, but I don't see any games that have been around a while with 5 stars. Even the best of the best games on the site seem to end up with maybe 4 1/2 stars at the absolute best and that's very rare. A game that has been around a while having 4 stars should be considered an achievement really.

So yeah it'll balance out with the exception that I mentioned of casual stuff being overrated and harder stuff being underrated.
