There are a bunch of shows people recommend all the time that are actually garbage that you shouldn't watch including Sword Art Online, Elfen Lied, pretty much anything ecchi, etc.
Of course once you've passed entry level you can graduate to the real shit like Jojo's or Kill la Kill
Genocyber and Ninja Scroll were also early impressions.

Well if you've ever watched Pokemon or Sailor Moon, then congratulations! You've watched Anime! However I would suggest Cowboy Bebop. I don't know if it is on Netflix, but any TV show can be watched on the Internet if you look hard enough.

DeathNote, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Black Butler for action-adventure types.
Bravo Girl (it's a super-kawaii-desu-ne type anime but there's a lot of tits) is a comedy.
Full Metal Panic (not related to Full Metal Alchemist) is a mix of comedy and action.
Strawberry Panic (it's a romance but it's full of women. Lesbian love story basically though not much as far as "action" goes. Making out in a couple episodes. Still good, though).
I guess I can recommend others if anyone wants to?
It seems like almost every popular anime except Cowboy Bebop and Miyazaki films are hated on these days. Thanks a lot, Nostalgia Critic. Well, Death Note does currently have a higher score. I found out that an anime called "The Mysterious Cities Of Gold" had the highest ever, so check that out. May not be that famous, but still awesome!

I'd recommend watching unabridged DBZ just cause it's a fascinating study in how to unnecessarily draw out a story.
Death Note had a very cool concept and started out pretty interesting, but overall wasn't that great and had some unintentional silliness.

Seriously, Sword Art Online is not that good, even before the Alfheim arc. It did have some excellent monster designs, though.

There's some good/popular entry-level stuff. Evangelion is what got me into anime and it's still my favorite, but it isn't for everyone. Death Note seems to be the most popular entry point and it is pretty great for the most part, I'd recommend starting with it. You'll probably figure out where to go from there.
Don't bother with the super huge shounen series (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, DBZ) as they're shit unless you grew up with them and they have so many episodes it's ridiculous. Don't bother with Elfen Lied.

I'm curious here, why is it that anime is the only medium that really gets this bad of a treatment when other mediums had or have similar things, beyond the general medium ignorance? I get that anime isn't for everyone, and it generally contains things that would be considered acceptable, or at least tolerable by Japanese standards, but you would think that people would've known this by now.
