Anime characters blue & purple hair

We could use normal hair, like brown, yellow, black (Ok that one is common), orange, dark brown, dark yellow.
Also speaking of hair, close the eyes more together and make them less bigger.

The point of anime style was to exaggerate the features, making the characters out of proportion with unnatural colors, as opposed to realistic characters.

I heard that the reason for the crazy hair was to make the characters more distinguished and recognizable.

Not all the Anime movies have that style, some of the Anime is realistic looking.

And yes, they damn well did it in the 80s, it was made up in the 50s, if not before.

It's always listed as seinen, but I personally think the tag doesn't even come close to being fitting.

I want to say it's shoujo, but the art style in K-On! is far from the disgrace of which is the shoujo-esque art style. Shounen really is the most fitting tag, really, in my opinion.

Yes the genre is kind of strange, you'd expect something other than seinen. At least PMMM's listing as a seinen series is justified considering what happens from episode 3 and onward.

Sometimes, I wonder if certain characters have blue or purple hair for a reason. Even moreso for green hair.

Code Geass: normal people have blue and purple hair, C.C. green. C.C. has that Geass giving thing, though.

Eureka Seven: Eureka blue, Sakuya purple. Both are Coralians (non-human). Anemone is pink, but she was an altered human or something.

Bleach: I fell behind on this, but aren't most of the blue/purple group either different types of people or have magic abilities?

Inuyasha: I think it applied to youkai.

Urusei Yatsura: applies it to aliens from other worlds.

Now, I am no otaku, and not that big into anime. But I do wonder how often blue/purple hair (and also green) are used to separate one type of character from another, or different races or species. Sometimes, they make hair those colors just because they can...

In To-Love Ru, all the characters that aren't aliens have normal(ish) hair, so like @Th-e said, it can be used to set certain characters apart. Sora no Otoshimono does something very similar to that too.
