I have a penis
The older bands that everyone knows are still talked about and listened to because they're good enough to withstand the test of time. Bands that sucked have faded into obscurity and therefore few people even know of their existence, making it seem like all the old bands were good.

This is probably the best answer to this question.
Very well thought out, I agree.
People think older music was better because all the shitty music has faded away, and is left out of the equation.

I think each of these artists had some really good songs.
The rest of this isn't directed at you yurgenburgen.
I think too much importance is put on how everyone else feels. the whole overrated, underrated debate is tired.
Why can't people just like, or dislike music, without looking around the room to see what everyone else is saying?
I like plenty of music that others would think is painfully embarrassing. Who cares? I like it. I'll flat out say it. Or if I don't like something, I'll say why, and you know what? It will be my own answer. My own thoughts. Not something my friends are influencing me to say.

People unironically listen to Bob Dylan and Joy Division which is kind of weird
A lot of the stuff that came out awhile ago seemed really bad then put when put in perspective with some of today's music, it's a lot better now than it was then. I try to be as open minded about artists as I can, don't think I really have any artists from the 80s or 90s that I know of that I really just can't stand

Unironically isn't a word, but I know what you mean. That right there gives me douche chills. People ironically listening to music. lmfao No wonder why people often call me out on being "edgy" like it's something I have planned and contrived purposefully. I forget some times that people out there really do have that kind of personality.
I think most people are so opposed fake, contrived personas, that they can't differentiate between real people with real problems, and people who are just being douchebags. Kind of like emo music. (See, I'm building up to something related to the topic..)
People listen to emo music and change their whole personalities to fit in with the style or fad. It's a phase, but a rather annoying one that others try to break by showing them how stupid it is.
The bigger picture though, is that people often can't understand that it isn't an act for everyone. Some people are seriously emotionally ruined, and it never had anything to do with the music.
Take me for example. I'm not ruled by my selections of music, or any group of people with shared ideals. My father was an alcoholic, who on multiple occasions tried to kill himself in front of me. He did end up killing himself too. Eventually, he jumped off a bridge.
See what I'm saying? I didn't watch TV or listen to the radio in order to become who I am. I am what I am through real events that I personally went through. I didn't just decide one day that I was going to be super cool, and act a certain way. I've never been that type of person.

Pretty much.
That being said, I don't like even most well known 80s rock bands because of their level of corniness; Guns'n'Roses, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Journey, Twisted Sister, Poison, etc. I just hate 80s rock in general, aside from 2nd wave punk bands.

Yeah, all those "I was born in the wrong generation" YouTube commenter kids are either conveniently ignoring or blissfully unaware of the Breads and Jefferson Starships of the world, or the Donny and Maries, the Sonny and Chers, the Captain and Tennilles. The past was hardly without its fair share of bland Top 40 pop crap, not to mention its own torturous novelty earworms.
Obviously that shit's going to be forgotten while the good stuff stands the test of time. Overall I'd the say the ratio of good to bad is probably about the same as it ever was, if not actually better because independent artists' ability to record and distribute their music has expanded so much.

I think there is more awesome music today. The Internet surely helped a lot for artists to distribute and get known without having to please a label.

Uh......I'm kinda guilty as charged. I collect 80's music primarily, so that accounts for my Dylan (who I like anyway).
Joy Division. I fucking love Joy Division. Give Atmosphere a spin and tell me it's not wonderful. I don't even get how people listen to things "ironically". I tell you something though, I'm a Goth and yeah, I listed to a lot of Goth music, tho not exclusively. OF COURSE I listen to Joy Division!
I mean, sure, you may prefer New Order, but what's not to like about Joy Division? Is it the baritone?

I don't think that music creates subcultures. I believe the opposite is true. Way before I heard a SWANS record of a Bolshoi record, I liked the idea of having hair that looked rather like the towers of Gormenghast (if I may be so pretentious). I read and still do, classic Gothic literature - The Castle of Otranto, Wuthering Heights, etc.
As a child, I loved stuff like The Addams Family, The Munsters, The Trap Door, Funny Bones, Count Duckula, Scooby Doo. Not scary, any of them, just off-kilter monster stuff.
My appearance? Well, I've got very fair skin, I have a fleshy upper lip, which is quite unusual for a man. I've always liked big hair. So, yeah, I backcomb my hair, I white up my skin and sometimes I use a touch of lipstick to pronounce my lips, but I already look a bit like Robert Smith as is.
I don't change who I am to fit into a subculture, I find the subculture fits into me. Yeah, I'm more likely to check out a Horror flick than a Romantic movie and more likely to check out a Goth album than a Blues album, but it was always that way anyway (and I'll still check out that Blues album).
The funny thing is that idea that subcultures are a means to find a sense of belonging in a group. Well, that may be for a limited time, but I've not met another Goth.

Record labels are there for that specific purpose of marketing an artists music. Getting popular on YouTube doesn't mean anything, people just click on a artists song and leave a nasty comment usually.

Your premise and conclusion are mutually exclusive of my desire to remark constructively.
However, as a means of justifying the aforementioned sentiment with a cursory placation, I am not much of a fan of Urine that Smells Like Sulphur.
