So I was watching this clip on youtube...
It's hard to watch and not just because of the poor editing choices. That's when I threw up my hands and said, “F**k this S**t.”
Its really not hard to find examples of misogyny in video games culture. I usually don't mind a little but when it defines the industry then something needs to be done.
So I am going to try to do my part. I'd like to try my hand at helping to create video games. I'm not going to change the world but at least I will be doing something other than complaining about how unfair things are. Its easy to judge hard to create.
So I came here. Newgrounds is known for amateur and underground games. So there must be people looking for talent to help them create their own games. But I am not sure where to start.
How do I find people who are looking for amateur talent?
How do I get people to find me?
Should I make a portfolio with my work or just throw random stuff I've done. And what should I put into it?
What should I expect from working on a game here?
Things like this and so on....
(Quick thing about my talents)
I have studied comics and even gotten a degree in Sequential art, so I am sort of a jack of all trades. I know character design, how to draw backgrounds, story boarding, and a little scripting and witting although I have no idea how a video game scrip looks like. For computers I know photoshop and a little Illustrator.

Portfolios never hurt. The main thing someone would be looking for in an artist for is art style(s), quality, and whether you use vector or bitmap images (as far as games).

Your first one will be shit, but after that you'll get better.

I would develop your storyboarding, scripting, character design, if those are things you want to do ofc. Jazza made a tutorial on how to make a short script. If you have every detail of an animation written and storyboarded out, it makes artists' lives significantly easier.

Kittykaboom, easily the best way to start is to create something of your own.
Unity is a great engine, and you can start by making some small, casual games to build up your portfolio and your knowledge of game development/design. You don't seem to have the programming background, but there's ways around that, such as graphical programming interfaces like Playmaker, and pre-built kits that you can skin/modify to get a handle on things.
You're right that if you don't contribute, you can't change anything! And, I think that even though the industry has made significant strides in its inclusion of women, we've got a ways to go. I can't wait to see what you make. :)

The way I've heard it, the first ten will be shit - that seems to be the agreed-on number among every game developer I've ever spoken to.
I'm on completed game #3 (lots of prototypes died on the way to that), so I've still got seven crap games to go before I start to write games that are actually somewhat good...roughly...
