I couldn't really recommend a lot since I too never had a N64 growing up... But I remember some games that were fun with friends were Mario Kart 64, Pokemon Stadium, Snap, and of course Smash Bros!

A lot of N64 games don't hold up very well, but there are a select few that do. Mario Kart/Mario 64, the two Zelda games, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Smash Brothers, Star Fox 64, and Jet Force Gemini are good games to start. Check out this article for some underrated classics (Winback is pretty great).

I'm going to be the odd one out and recommend games that weren't made by Rare or Nintendo.
Chameleon Twist 1 & 2
Bomberman 64
Fighters Destiny and (if it's like the first one, which from what I've seen it is) Fighter Destiny 2.
Mortal Kombat 4 (even though it's also on other consoles and the Dreamcast version is the best one)
Rakuga Kids
Vigilante 8 (worst port of the game, though)

I still have my N64 hooked up that I got when I was a kid. These are some of my favorite games from my own collection.
Mischief Makers
Yoshi's Story
Perfect Dark
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Mario 64
Kirby 64
Duke Nukem 3D (which I have on X Box 360)
I also used to love Goldeneye and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, but I lost those. I still have Nightmare Creatures and Mace: the Dark Age, which have not aged well, but ain't exactly terrible for games of the time. I wouldn't bother with those two unless you find them for a couple bucks at a store (as opposed to online).
Some others I remember enjoying back in the day are Super Smash Bros, Turok 1 and 2, Mortal Mombat 4, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero, Banjo Kazooie, Doom 64, Hexen, Robotron 64, Fighting Force, Killer Instinct Gold, Gauntlet Legends (Dark Legacy is better, though, which I have for Gamecube and still love), Rampage World Tour and Universal Tour, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, the Mario Party games, Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero, Gex, Winback, Bio F.R.E.A.K.S, Dark Rift, Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, LEGO Racers, Tetrisphere, War Gods, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, ClayFighter 63 1/3 and Spiderman, though I played that one on PS1. Some of those may or may not hold up now. It's been a long time.
Mischief Makers is probably the most underrated N64 game I've ever played. I still like to play it occasionally. Some of the boss fights are especially cool.

There's a lot of really good ones out there. The only problem is that they can cost quite a bit. Growing up, I had quite a few but I sold most of them.
Ones I can suggest:
DK64-Just make sure you have the expansion pack
Conker's bad fur day
Mario kart 64
Super Mario 64
star wars rogue squadron (If you're into that sort of thing)
And might I suggest other ones on this list Here
Excuse me for parentheses and lysdexia.

You'll get used to it, you just wont enjoy it. It's just not a very good game unless you have nostalgia backing it up.

I would just like to reaffirm on: Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64... Hm... Well, those are my big ones. The first four are some of my favourite games period.

Perfect Dark is a good choice if you like shooters
RPG: I would roll with the Zelda's & Goemon's Great Adventure
Fighters: N64 Smash Bros is the (in my opinion the best version) & Killer Instinct Gold
Platformers: Super Mario 64 & Banjo Kazooie

I'm a little surprised nobody mentioned F-Zero X yet.
I wouldn't rank it amongst the greatest N64 titles, but it's definitely one of the most enjoyable racing games I've ever played along with Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart.
For the rest, definitely get:
Majora's Mask
Ocarina of Time
Banjo Kazooie and Tooie
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Paper Mario
Mario 64
Goldeneye
as everyone has been telling you.

What's wrong with Jet Force Gemini? I thought that was a really fun shoot-em-up. It just got a lot tedious at the end when you had to save ALL the bears.

But what about Fighter's Destiny and Chameleon Twist and each respective game's sequel? I mean, Fighter's Destiny is one of the most innovative fighting games you'll ever play. Plus, you don't have to use the N64's dumb analog stick to play it!
