Just to name a few

There are just so fucking many of these things it's insane. The market used to be pretty small. You pretty much had everquest 2, Wow, Runescape, Maplestory, and a few others. But in recent years, the pool of MMOS has gotten huge. There are literally thousands of these things. But the thing I notice is that they're almost all Asian. Mostly South Korean and Japanese. They're, for the most part, WoW clone grindfests with less to do. The rest are just shitty browser MMOS. And many of them use this shitty 'freemium' model that get's used a lot. The game is free, but you need to cough up some cash to use good equipment and get good items; pay to win.

With thousands of games, 90% of which being the same, I really don't see how so many exist. Eventually, too many will be made and the player bases will be spread too thin, then a lot of them are going to have to be shut down. I think this massive flood of MMOs is why MMOs that used to be big are going downhill; tons of people who used to play the big ones are now playing smaller ones. And you have to remember, MMOs aren't like regular games; you only play one or two at a time and you pay over time. So if you're playing WoW, chances are you're not also spending time in RS and EQ in the same week or month.

I've noticed this with MOAB games, too. Since DOTA 2 and LoL have been really successful, a fuckton of Asians have been making their own shitty/ripoff MOAB games to try to cash in on the market. None of these people care about video games, they just want to profit from the success of others.

Here's an article talking about what I'm talking about: http://www.onrpg.com/articles/the-devolution-of-mmos/

Discuss.

Probably the latter but that's just me.

I would say the latter as well. The only MMO I really care about is Dragon Ball Online. That game needs to get its servers back up and come to the Western World.

I noticed that none of them had any originality - I didn't know to this extent though.

I quit runescape in 2012 and completely kicked the addiction in 2013 but I did try out mabinogi in that period I was trying to get off it and it just wasn't as good. It seemed to be one of the few that didn't directly copy everything from WOW - it just seemed weird though. Runescape practially becoming WOW with it's EOC update drove me away from Runescape but if all these asian MMOs are the same then there's no chance for MMOs.

I just wish that MMORPGs had originality these days. It seems that they're all just making them for profit.

I guess personally I'm just tired of them. Most asian MMOs are shovelware lacking any originality and / or budget to make it big. Just put up a game still in beta, add a cash shop and rack in all the money you can get before your servers shut down.

I actually enjoy WoW a lot, sadly I don't have the spare time to play it anymore though. But I never wanted to check any of these lesser "free" ones as they just scream of desperation.

There is also the adverts for the "Adult 18+ men only, you're friends won't be seeing much of you when inside!" adverts which litter my youtube adverts for some reason. As not only does it scream of desperation, but also not holding back on their desire to screw up people, and finally "men only" with pictures of mostly naked females.....surely you want to advertise there ARE females? Not say that all the females you will see are all men in the game? They don't even know how to market properly...

Also I will leave this here. I despise these adverts. (I couldn't bring myself to screen cap the picture of the more perverse one mentioned above)

You don't need a brain to know who the real target audience is. (13 year old males)

The real adult-only MMOs are generally only advertised on porn sites.

Dungeon Fighter Online
Truly a gem. (liked Streets of Rage? Double Dragon? Wanna combine RPG elements with that?)
Shutdown 2013 due to "lack of interest" (really was shutdown because NA Nexon wants to focus their resources on Combat Arms and Maplestory)

Elsword Online is pretty good; I'm currently playing them atm.

My problem with these games is not their repetitiveness.
My problem is:
1) most are very pay-to-win/micro-transaction heavy
2) most treat the NA market like shit and try to milk out as much money as possible, while they treat the Asian markets pretty well. This usually leaves the NA in-game markets hurting pretty bad. At the same time, NA players seem to be a little more greedy that others, but meh

The winning strategy for MMOs is the same as the winning strategy for casinos. You only win if you're the house.
The only side remotely worth looking into is setting up/running your own MMO. Not joining them.

I took part in game development and designing for a quite well known game company from Korea. Shit, we only and only did MMORPG like there wasn't anything else to work with. There were so many MMOs in the market that we had to churn out like a new game every 2-3 months. Totally effortless when comes to polishing the games. I quit after I couldn't stand the insanity of it.

If you see those sexy boob-showing MMOs popping around, don't play them. 99% of them are worthless shits anyway.

It's nice to see that what I'm saying isn't just unfounded nonsense, and that someone from the industry can agree that these games are shitty shovel-ware.

Where does it go from here, though?
Will this continue to be the norm?

I really hope it won't continue like this.

Hopefully, a few MMOs will rise above the rest, people will focus on those, and the shitty ones will fail and shut down. It won't be a monopoly, but it will be a lot less shit.

The first MMOs weren't released until 1996.

Before that there were only text-based MUDs and MUSHs.
