Why is gold valued? 2014-01-19 07:21:18 Reply

Why is gold valued? I understand that it's rare.. but so what? Other than being rare shiny metal, it really doesn't have any other consumption value. Other than being able to clobber someone over the head, it has no use. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm sure you can do lots of things with gold... but nothing that REALLY matters, like being able to eat or drink it.

Is it just a mass delusion that it's important at all?

If you ask me, if shit hits the fan, I would rather be rich in food and water.

It used to be the Exodia of metals. So people used it a lot and it finally got some reall value. Then banking stuff happened which I still don't get.

Here's the thing:
Gold is an unrecoverable and long lasting material that can be naturally found without artificially creating it. Being rare is just the half of it. There is a need for a standard measurement of value that other objects can be compared to. Gold fits the bill perfectly for the aforementioned reasons. Food is important, but unless you live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with a barter economy, not very practical as a measurement of wealth because it spoil easily. Iron rusts, steel needs to be created, tin and aluminum are are way too common, I guess, and I suppose gems are too hard to shape into and mold into a specific shape and weight (unlike gold, which is very easy to work with). In order for civilizations and individuals alike to have a simplified way of comparing their wealth, gold is the best way to do it, seems.

but yes, when shit hits the fan, food, weapons, and water are the way to go.

Economy can only exist with a base for the value. All the currency we use has actual gold linked to it, which is why mass inflation is such a problem, as producing more currency than there is gold forces the currency to lessen in value as the gold base can only increase if it is actually added to, regardless of how much currency is made.

That is of course if you like your words bastardized. The correct original spelling is Aeroplane. Airplane is mainly what Americans & Canadians call them but since it is the English language after all, I prefer mine spelled correctly.

Nobody Says "Aeroplane" . . . That Language Is Adapting & Becoming Truer To The Actual Phonetic Pronunciation Of The Word Does Not Mean That The Language Is "Bastardized". Being Purist About A Language Which Is Based Off Of Latin & Has Adopted Large Parts Of Its Glossary From Other Languages Is Just Silly In My Opinion. A Real Purist Wouldn't Say "Aeroplane" Is The Correct Spelling Of Airplane But Rather Something Along The Lines Of "Gloria In Excelsis Deo Et In Terra Pax"

You could use bottled water as a trade currency and wear other shiny metals as jewelry, yes. It's kind of irreplacable for high-end electronics, though.

That's weird because that's what we call them here in Australia. So much for 'NOBODY SAYS'.

I'm fairly confident you've actually done your homework here!

You've actually surveyed EVERY single English speaking person on the planet for this juicy bit of insightful information I'm guessing?

Yeah that's what I thought

Thanks for your opinion, it was well worth the time it took you to type it :-)

The General's poor attempts to define and describe gold are absolutely brain-hurting to read.

It's shiny and our ancestors loved that. Hard and shiny. After generations and generations of people worshiping gold, it's been embedded into our society, and even our DNA to love gold.

If you ask me, if shit hits the fan, I would rather be rich in food and water.

Gold is the only thing in the history of civilization that has never not been valuable. It's always been incredibly valuable, no matter how bad things were, and I don't doubt that's gonna be the same for a loooong time to come.

But only for it's conductivity properties (it has a very low resistance)

Not to just be an asshole and disprove you, but the current currency we have which is federal reserve notes, is based completely on credit. The gold and silver standard that president Kennedy tried to reinstate was dropped in the early 20th century.

Been watching the youtube fear mongering videos about money, don't you?

Doesn't matter what, money is still heavily depending on gold value. Welcome to knowledge of Gold Standard, asshole.

I was trying to not be an asshole but whatever makes you feel better. I think it's pretty common knowledge that this system of credit-bound debt is not based on anything of actual value. Money is the instrument of debt if you didn't know. My information comes from multiple sources including, yes youtube videos and various documentaries. Collectively, the pretty much say the same thing.
