Nigerian Skin Whitening 2014-01-17 07:10:07 Reply

The media has made no secret of the insane popularity of skin bleaching. While there are a lot of continents that use the products, Nigeria has the highest sales for any country in the world. According to the World Health Organization, 77 percent of Nigerian women bleach their skin and a lot of it is because of societal pressures.

Friend and Nigerian-American rapper Kingsley “Rukus” Okafor explains the obsession:

“It’s hard to understand until you’ve been in the streets of an African nation,” he wrote in a comment on my Facebook page. “There’s a different treatment and desirability factor in Africa for lighter skinned women, well beyond what we experience in the US. It’s an epidemic. You can’t walk a day in the streets of Lagos without seeing someone who has/is bleached. The possible benefits (more respect, increased desirability to men) outweigh the consequences, especially in a male-dominated society where women’s “independence” is frowned upon. Finding a well-to-do husband/sugar daddy is a priority and women are willing to do what they have to, to fit standards of beauty. The euphemism is “skin-toning” and although “bleaching” is banned, skin-toning is a huge money-maker that I’m sure has lined the pockets of enough politicians to allow it to keep being sold despite international outcry.”

Nigerian musician Femi Kuti, son of legendary artist Fela Kuti, says many bleach their skin because they praise Western cultures and products, while dismissing their own.

He told Al Jazeera: “An African will prefer to be called John-Philip. If you said your name was Chukwu Emeka Afongkudong they will say you are from the village. You are backward. How can you have such a name? We really look down on our culture and heritage instead of being proud of it.”

(before and after photos - disgusting)

The rancid influence of white culture strikes again.

Do you think it's disgusting what white culture has done to the self-esteem of beautiful Africans?

Is it horrifying that some young Africans believe they must "act white" in order to achieve social mobility?

Are some black Americans (such as Nicki Minaj) also to blame for lightening their skin and then exporting their image globally?

Is Dencia, the Nigerian pop star pictured below, hot?

Tell me what you think, Newgrounds.

I always thought black skin on women just looks exotic and hot, but incredibly-tanned white women just look like they're trying too hard.

Nice! First image still looks sexier, but I'm thinking that may be more due to a lack of clothing than the actual skin tone. :P As long as she's happy though it's all good.

What I mean about Ghana being better than Nigeria:

Nigeria's just sad. It has some of the most ancient West African history, it's the home nation of Afrobeat and they got oil. What their politicians did to them is just disgusting. What companies like Shell did too, violently suppressing local nationalist and conservationist movements. Nigeria deserves better.

I spent a few months in Nigeria a few years back. Beautiful country, beautiful people, but the sheer diversity between white and black races was astounding to me. My friend and I were constantly called 'master' by anyone who didn't know us by first name, simply because we were white. I honestly never knew of skin whitening, or at least to this extent. I had heard women over there had used agents to make their skin appear lighter, but I didn't know it was with the intention of looking 'whiter'.

It's sad to read. I know OP is just having a troll but it's legitimately disgusting that these are the lengths they feel they need to go to for social/occupational pursuits.

The sad thing is that the lips make it look like it's just an albino black person. Although, if you could have surgery on them, I'll bet it's completely possible to go from black to white entirely.

That's like white people getting a tan.

Fashion is hurtling towards white women and black men.

Call me crazy, but I find black people attractive too.

The situation in most Asian countries are not all that different. Where children in Korea are being encouraged by their parents to undergo rhinoplasty and eye reshapening for a more desired look.

"#1 -- South Korea
The plastic surgery industry has stormed Asia, and South Korea has the continent's biggest clientele. The Economist first reported that a 2009 survey by a market-research firm known as Trend Monitor found that about one in five women from Seoul have undergone some sort of plastic surgery.

According to the report, more than 360,000 total procedures were performed in 2010, with the most common procedures being liposuction, nose jobs and blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery. More than 44,000 double eyelid surgeries were performed in 2010.

"In Asia, it's very common for patients to want more Western-looking eyes," said Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "So that's really no surprise there.""

To those saying it is like reverse tanning:

consider that tanning is not in aid of trying to look unwesternised, or to look more African. It is a western fad based on strange health biases, just like how paleness was attractive on the basis that you looked wealthy (i.e. not having to work outside like a peasant). What these Nigerians are doing is not 'reverse tanning' because they are not attaining a natural state with what they are doing, and are very sadly told that their own way of life is disgusting.

If you can't see the error here, then you are the fault.

Whether it's "natural" or not isn't the point; they are altering their skin for aesthetic reasons.

and are very sadly told that their own way of life is disgusting.

Who is saying that?
All I can see is that they are saying that looking white is better than looking black. It doesn't mention anything to do with their "way of life"; it's completely superficial.
