Megaman 1 and 3 can be pretty tough.
Ghosts n' Goblins is a hard one.

I'm just going to say right now that you shouldn't listen to most of the responses to this thread. The NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy is incredibly exploitable and mostly trial and error. The Mega Man games aren't that difficult, but they are decently challenging. But Ghosts 'n Goblins is just a broken game. There's a lot of issues with it, like programming quirks, but it's just complete trial and error the entire game.
Anyway, I know you have said you beat Castlevania 3, but have you beaten it on the hard difficulty? I'd say give it a shot as it's much more difficult than the normal mode.
I don't really know any other difficult NES games, but I could recommend a few Sega Genesis games that will piss you off.
Like Sonic Spinball. You only get 3 lives and no continues to beat the game's four levels. I've never actually beaten this one myself, considering how the game also has some luck to hit.
There's also Vectorman 1 and 2. You don't have any continues in either game, so be sure to get as many extra lives as you can to beat the 16 "days" of the first game and the 22 "scenes" of the second game.
I should also mention that you can shoot in 8 directions, have a mid-air jump that's also an attack, and have a fairly lengthy health bar that can be increased up to 10 hits if you find the items that do that. Even with all of this, these games will absolutely destroy you with everything they throw at you.
If you do play these games, I suggest going to the Options menu and Information screen in the first game so the game tells you about it's various power-ups and other things instead of just dropping right in. Trust me, it helps.

I remember S.C.A.T: Special Cybernetic Attack Team being pretty hard when I was a kid. But I was just a kid, after all. Also, yeah, the name is unfortunate.

Bro that game is definition of hard. (And Math, of course).
I'm just a girl from Texas. Nothing much.
Life Force and Abadox.
The only way I was able to beat Abadox was by using save states on the emulator I was playing. I've never seen past the second level of Life Force though...

You know there are harder games not made by Nintendo right? Oh right, probably because only Nintendo makes good games or something stupid like that nevermind.

Those fucking Japs back in the day didn't think to add more content to a game, add more levels or replayability, just jack up the difficulty and see us muddle through 1 level every three days of playing.
Those were dark days of gaming before online updates, PC gaming and discs

Super Kaizo (Japanese for a donkey) World, a ROM hack of Super Mario World, even thought it's not official. The first jump took me like 20 tries.
The only Nintendo system I have is a GameBoy Advance, so I'm really not the person to talk to about Nintendo games. However, I hear that the hard setting on MadWorld is pretty ridiculous.

I've beaten Abadox before on an actual NES (No Game Genies or anything). Ditto with Life Force. Of the two, Abadox is far harder and the strategy is pretty much get every good item in the game, never get any item you don't want, and never die not even once beyond that first level. No forgiveness at all.
As far as good hard NES games, off the top of my head Abadox, Life Force, Adventure Island, Air Fortress, Amagon, Battletoads, Snake Rattle 'n Roll, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Journey to Silius, Jurassic Park, Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Double Dragon trilogy, Batman, Milon's Secret Castle, Rad Gravity, R.C. Pro-Am, Gradius, Ghost Lion, Castlevania trilogy, both Zelda games, any of the Simpsons games, (Mike Tyson's) Punch-Out!!, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Adventures of Lolo trilogy.
Should get you started with some great oldschool gaming fun at least.
Gun-nac starts off pretty simple but gets really brutal towards the end. I've never beat the last level
I forgot about the NES Ninja Turtles game. I used to have it and it was fucking impossible. Play that if you want to lose your shit.

Yeah this game is ridiculously difficult. The strategy at the very end of the game and the only way to beat it that I know of, is get there with full energy on all turtles and lots of those "hammer" looking weapons on Donatello, run through this gauntlet hall taking damage on turtles until right before they die, then switching turtles (very important none actually die!), and then at the end you end up with Donatello with only small life energy and those "hammer" things to use against Shredder. Never take damage at Shredder.
Mario 2, not the crappy USA version but the tough as nails Japanese version.

I don't think so, if you want to play, it got ported to western countries eventually in Mario all stars on SNES and I think the mario 20th (may be 25th) anniversary game on wii.

Nah. It was just renamed "Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels" and is relatively easy to find.
