Maybe you just need to appreciate the artform of the simultaneously interactive and immersive digital experience.
Want pure action? Ok, fine.
Want art with which you can interact?
Ok.
Whatever you like.

In the end of the day they are just accessories to your toy.
Sounds like someone needs to learn how to appreciate a good storyline. Or you just have the attention span of a squirrel when watching a cut scene.
Yeah I noticed the newer games are slowly becoming more like a interactive movie. There's always an option to skip the cutscenes.

What does this glossy ass trend have to do with games? As for games getting all the more cinematic, as long as not all games turn out this way I think it's a nice change. Movies haven't managed to borrow elements from games in a very good way yet, but some games have managed to pull of pulling elements from movies perfectly. Games like Max Payne 3 and Half-Life 2 were a breeze to play, and it's no denying that has a lot to do with the focus on cutscenes, and at the same time letting the player feel like he's in control even when these scenes kick in.
What annoys me is when you can't skip the cutscenes if you want to, lack of control is what really brings gaming quality down.
I usually avoid games that have cutscenes at all, play old classics such as Spyro on PS1.
When it comes to newer, well "Virtua Fighter 5" :)
But if more people would make more 3D platformers aswell and emerge the player with the gameplay rather than cutscenes, then that would be the cream on the cake :)
You should submit this as your master's thesis.
For I am and forever shall be... a master ruseman.
If all cutscene games suck, then why is one of my all-time favorite '90s games a cutscene game?
Maybe the stories tied in better with the gameplay back in those days.
Video games have gotten too expensive. These days you need to be a damn millionaire to be a gamer.
Companies seem to take less risks with their games these days. I guess it has to be that way for them to stay alive because of the cost of making them. They get more and more expensive with every generation.

"Modern" games, I suppose. I could much more easily justifying dropping $80 or so on, say, the DMC reboot (no, I don't care what you say, it's a sweet game IMO), because I'm going to get a fair bit of play out of it, as opposed to whatever-number CoD or Battlefield or, essentially, three-hour game.
also there's always the pre-owned market for consoles, i guess.

Or maybe some people don't like how video games are turning into interactive movies.

I can't believe how many people are defending cutscenes by saying that they add to the "story".
90% of video game stories are complete shit. That's why video game movies are universal complete shit. End of story.
Normally, I would say that this would belong in the video game section of the forum, but considering that many of the responses are the same ignorant drivel, it's probably was a good idea that it wasn't.
Good god folks, if you don't like what's available, then don't buy it and let the people who are willing to buy the game enjoy it then. If anything, this is what happens when we get spoiled with a plentiful amount of games out there, we have to have a total bitchfit on how certain publishers won't make a certain game that the vocal minority wants to have, only to get upset when it's either half-assed or didn't entirely go to plan.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

That's not ignorant, it's a fact. It seems like we have a habit of demonizing this behavior and make people who enjoy those games to be corporate stooges, which is a unfair cheap shot to them, and just as ignorant.
The complaints you mock come from genuine fans, fans of good series that have been being fucked with in attempt to make them more consumer friendly.
Here we go, it's ruined because it's "consumer friendly" garbage argument again. If you enjoy a series of games, then why should they complain about it being more "consumer friendly" and not how the game actually is? Granted, not all of them turn out well, but more times than not, the quality of games don't really suffer in comparison, and if you get more people to play your game, that's not necessarily a bad thing, really it's all about personal taste at this point.
Why shouldn't a fan of a game be upset when a sequel to their favourite series looks barely recognisable?
Changes happen, and if you don't like the changes, then don't play them, it's that simple. What exactly do you want them to do? It seems like on one hand, you want these developers to "experiment" and "try new things", (when most of them try to do just that) but on the other hand, you bash them for making a certain game of a series be different from the rest for whatever reason, it's hypocritical.
Now I prefer the DmC reboot over the original, but as a Fallout fan I can understand why some would hate the thing. The developers go out of their way to shit on the old fans.
I understand that because it's a matter of preference, but you got to remember that different developers are going to do what they want with an IP, and if turns out to be an improvement, then why complain about it? Times change and so do games, if people like it, then good for them and if not, their are many other games available, simple as that.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

The line here has to be drawn between 'what people genuinely like', and 'what people buy out of pressure'. I know of people in the neighbourhood who buy the few bestselling titles (need I remind anyone again: Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, etc., etc.,) just because they want to belong to the rest of the group.
Don't get me wrong, any title can be subjected to the same level of pressure. I got interested in Final Fantasy partly due to everyone around me thinking it was cool. I don't quite have the same level of interest anymore.

Which brings me to Chuggaaconroy's and Proton Jon's arguments about this age-old question, do games have to be hard in order to be good? CC puts it quite nicely: sometimes you don't want a hard game. You want something to enjoy yourself over after a long, tiring day, and it need not necessarily be a hard game. It could be, perhaps, a game that would put a smile on your face. And it doesn't matter how user-friendly that game is -- if it serves its purpose, it serves it purpose.

I used to have this sort of gripe with Kingdom Hearts. The first game allowed me to take as much time as I needed; later games required players to be speed-based, or get involved in almost unrealistic combat.
My answer would perhaps be this: what are you playing the game for? What are you following the series for? If you've got a particular play style for the whole series, then try use that play style. If the game does NOT allow you to use your previous play style, then try the new addition that is given to you. Don't be stuck in a rut.
Seriously, whiny fans over whiny video game series. We kinda can be part of this whiny fanbase sometimes, if we're not careful. Need I remind people just how bratty the classic Sonic vs modern Sonic fanbases can be?

And to make my point clear to the OP and anyone else posting replies.
Video games are immersive. They are like any art form: they tell a story. Older video games had not much space to tell a story. There were a few exceptions with a few DOS, NES and SNES games with still images that could qualify as cutscenes, but not very many.
Sometimes you have to think in order to play a game, but sometimes, you just don't want to think. You want to be intuitive, to do what other gamers would naturally do. After a long, hard day's work, you don't want to rack your brains even further now, do you? Some would -- I have no problems with that. Others won't!
The line between it being a video game and an interactive movie is slim. But I can say this: if you want the classic example of interactive movies, think back to those 1980s arcade games where you had to hit a button in the exact time to trigger the right reaction; otherwise, it was game over. Was that Dungeons and Dragons, now? By contrast, most video games DON'T have that kind of laziness. There are proper battles and levelling up systems, and other proper game mechanics.
Also, changes in appearance. Now I agree that YouTube One is a horrible layout -- not because of how it looks, but because it takes forfreakingever to get the hang of. Plus, it's turning into Google Plus Tube, which a lot of us are not happy with. But Soundcloud. Newgrounds. Other sites having glossier appearance changes. They simply look pleasing to the eye, and much more appealing to the ordinary Internet-goer.
If you want to groan about everything having beautiful glossy UIs, why don't you complain to Microsoft or Apple or whoever has created your operating system, and tell them to change it back to the way it was before? Heck, go ask Microsoft to repackage and resell Windows 1 as the brand-new, cutting-edge OS of the future. Geez, Louise.
It's because of all the long cutscenes with way too much dialogue in it.
i think you have shit taste in video games.

You've never seen any of them? Also, the Mortal Kombat Legacy series on YouTube is cool. It has its moments that bugged me, but it makes up for it with some really cool parts.
